Nanny State.

Posted by Shirley Anne on February 28, 2009

What are your opinions of the so called ‘Nanny State’? We find government interfering in the way we lead our lives. For instance, we are told how bad smoking and drinking is for us and the Government then impose a levy on tobacco and alcohol in an attempt to dissuade us from partaking of these things. We are told our cholesterol should be kept below a certain level and they do everything to persuade us to follow a healthy lifestyle. On the one hand we get taxed but on the other hand we just get advice. Maybe they should place a tax on butter, cheese and fatty foods like they do on alcohol and tobacco. It proves one thing to me, they just want the cash. If they were really concerned they would impose high levels of tax on all things which are deemed bad for us.
However, I think they shouldn’t interfere in any way. Give out the advice yes but levy taxes, no! What gives them the right to do that anyhow? OK if we don’t take the advice then that is our problem and we should pay the price as in paying for health care when we are not looking after ourselves. I appreciate that in other countries paying for health care is normal but in the UK it is essentially free (through our National Insurance scheme, which we pay for through our earnings). The choice in any event is ours and not theirs. Any opinions on this?

Stubborness of heart

Posted by Shirley Anne on February 28, 2009

I had a really nice lunch today, well dinner to be precise and my guest and I talked about all sorts of things. Usually I do most of the talking! Asking about different menus and items on the menus I wanted to know their opinion of different things. I asked whether they had tasted swordfish or sea bass amongst other things, to which the reply was ‘I don’t know’. ‘Well why not’ was my next question. ‘I don’t know,’ was their reply. ‘So you’ve no idea what these things taste like’, I asked. ‘No’. ‘Would you like to try them to find out’? ‘No’. ‘Why not’? You get the picture. The point I was making is this. How can you say you don’t like something unless you have tried it? How can you form an opinion without having a knowledge?
I use this incident as an example. It just reminded me of how some people can be so stubborn in their approach to many things in life.
Some people are so stubborn and it is such a shame I feel because they may be missing out on many things unecessarily. Stubborness is not always a symptom of fear as in some cases but a refusal to face life full on.
The dinner went very well as it always does when I am with this person because they are very close to me. I always accept their point of view but at the same time I have a great concern for their attitude and I think it is such a shame that they cannot feel free to explore. That’s life though eh?
