Let downs and hiccups….

Posted by Shirley Anne on July 9, 2009

Ah, such is life. A week ago last Monday I visited my doctor for a routine check-up before the dispensing of my hormone medications. I always apply for a re-issue of my medications two weeks before my present stock runs out which gives my pharmacy enough time to prepare, although I cannot see why it takes them the usual four days to do that. The pills come pre-packed by the manufacturer so it is only a question of labelling. Anyhow this time I had arranged for my pharmacy to collect the prescription request from my doctor’s surgery and deliver the prescription to my home. They were suposed to do that last Friday but somehow some other pharmacy had collected the request. When I called at the store to find out what the problem was I was given this information with the promise that all would be sorted out on Monday, that is the Monday just passed. I was assured I could collect my prescription today, Thursday so as I was going to town on other business I called into the pharmacy to collect it. Let down again! It appears they didn’t have the correct strength tablets but again assured me that I would be able to collect the proper ones tomorrow, Friday. Usually I don’t have a problem collecting my prescription because I usually do the leg-work myself, that is I take my request to my doctor’s surgery with the name of the pharmacy written on it so that the correct pharmacy collects it. The following week I make the trip to the pharmacy and have no problem collecting it. It would appear that if you want something doing it is better to do it yourself! Fortunately I still have more than a week’s supply to keep me going. I know which method I will be using next time!
That was one hiccup today. Another was my shopping trip. I went into a particular store to buy toiletries. I use this store for all my toiletries as they are inexpensive without losing quality. I also buy my toiletries in bulk to save journeys. I buy toothpaste, mouthwash, soaps, shampoos and a host of other things, so my bag is usually quite full. One item I wanted wasn’t there on the shelf, they hadn’t re-stocked the shelves. Now instead of going to the stockroom and refilling the shelf they say they cannot do that when I ask because the do that at specific times. I wonder how many customers they lose by doing that? It isn’t a major problem to me of course, I will simply go again in a day or so but the items I wanted I do use every day. I have that one covered though, having bought in bulk last time I have quite a stock at home. Now you can see why I buy in bulk, why I ensure I have enough of anything should they not be available when I call. Life is full of let downs and hiccups isn’t it? Be prepared so that disappointment will not lead to doing without.

Movie

Posted by Shirley Anne on July 7, 2009

When I was in the US a couple of weeks ago I went to see a movie. It was ‘The Proposal’, starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. I fell asleep after the first half hour, not because I was bored, I was simply tired. Today I got the chance to see it again, free. My ex had won two tickets to see it and we went together this evening. I am happy to say I stayed awake this time and found the film very funny and entertaining. Yes, it does have a happy ending!

Just a Drink

Posted by Shirley Anne on July 5, 2009

Went for my usual Sunday morning stroll today. It was a very warm morning with just a light breeze. Perfect. Not that the weather stops me from my meanderings, I go dressed to suit the conditions. So I walked my usual route along the sea front but today I decided to turn into town after a while so that I could visit the pharmacy which dispenses my medications. They collect the prescription from the surgery and I go and collect it when it is ready. However I was expecting the pharmacy to deliver to my house on Friday but they didn’t. That was the reason for my detour. Having reached the shop I found it closed and I would have to wait a half hour before they opened so I continued my walk to return later. I had gone but a short distance and I walked by a pub outside of which a guy was doing a general clean up of the area around it. Turns out he works there a few hours each day. With a great smile on his face he greeted me in his Welsh accent. ‘Good morning sweetheart, it’s nice to see a lovely lady’. Laying it on a bit thick I thought but I replied nevertheless. ‘Don’t I know you’? I asked. He was taken aback and I could see the little cogs whirring in his head. When I refreshed his memory he exclaimed, ‘Oh yes, I remember now. How are you doing’? We chatted a bit more and I told him I was out walking but needed to visit the pharmacy before returning home. He asked if I would come inside the pub when it opened at eleven. I said I might but I needed to continue my walk first. I would return later. So I continued on my way and did return a half hour later. He bought me the drink he’d promised, a diet cola as I wasn’t drinking alcohol so early in the day and before lunch too! A friend of his popped in and we were introduced. After a half hour I said I must leave to visit the pharmacy, go home and mow the lawn before it rained. The forecast had mentioned the possibility of rain. ‘OK’, he said, ‘but can we meet up again for a drink or maybe dinner somewhere’? I declined his offer but said maybe we’ll meet up again soon as it is a small town. In actuality he lives literally just around the corner from where I live but I didn’t disclose that fact. The guy is pleasant enough but I am not interested in the least. I don’t know what it is with guys, they buy you a drink and expect something will come of it. So I left the pub and went to the pharmacy. It turns out that my prescription had not been ready when they went to collect it from my doctor so they were unable to deliver my medication. That will be sorted this week.
So I arrived home and by this time the weather had become overcast so my ex and I got to work mowing the lawn before it rained. The garden is fairly large so it was going to take a while. I could feel the rain beginning to fall but it was ever so light. I managed to get all but the last strip mowed when suddenly the heavens opened and let go a downpour. I struggled but managed to finish the job and we dashed into the garage like two drowned rats. Great fun. I had asked if my ex would like to dine out but we decided to stay at home instead. Whilst we were preparing our dinner the sun came out and now it is gloriously sunny again. This is England in Summer. I paint a picture of rain, sun, rain but it isn’t always this way.

My Bag and I

Posted by Shirley Anne on July 4, 2009

Although my passion is shoes I love my bags too. I don’t know how I managed without them before. We’ve all heard the phrase ‘she’s got everything but the kitchen sink in there’, well it’s not far from the truth. LOL. For my work I have to carry a log book, a dairy, a phone, a pen, business cards etc. and for myself, a comb, lipstick, powder, perfume, purse, keys, medication and anything else I can think of. There are far fewer things in my bags when I am out socialising or going shopping. The thing is this, where would I keep them had I no bag at all? For my female readers, ‘What do you keep in your bag’?
I love my bag and go nowhere without one.

Bar Steward

Posted by Shirley Anne on July 3, 2009

I had the most ‘bar steward’ of a job to do today. Normally taking 2 hours at most, it took me more than twice that time to complete. Almost every aspect had a problem to sort before I could commence to the next stage. Even the preliminary preparations were fraught with obstacles. Just one of those jobs that really test your spirit. The up side was that it paid well. Most of the time things in life go quite smoothly but now and then things can siddenly go horribly wrong and it makes one feel like returning to bed and starting over. We’ve all heard the saying ‘These things are sent to try us’. Maybe they are, who knows? In any event we must be prepared for the negative things in life and not be one who gives in too easily. I don’t know about you but I am the type of person who doesn’t like being defeated by the task in hand and I persevere until I finish it. Maybe I’ll return to it the next day if needs be. Another thing I don’t like is taking short cuts or doing a job that is not 100% what I am capable of doing. I set myself high standards and won’t make do with second best if it is within my capability to do better. It was still a ‘bar steward’….LOL

Barbecue days

Posted by Shirley Anne on July 2, 2009

Yesterday my eldest son asked if I could look at his electric oven as it wasn’t heating up. He and his wife live about 26 miles away. I had a job more local to investigate first in the morning and I invited my ex to come with me so that we could both go to visit my son. I assessed the job, which I did today and went on to my son’s house. It didn’t take long to learn that the element had burnt out and needed replacing. I found a place that either supplies elements or makes them but it was another 28 mile journey. Anyhow we got the part, fitted it and all was well. When his wife, my daughter-in-law came home she thanked me and asked if we’d like to stay for a barbecue. It was such a lovely evening we stayed and enjoyed a really nice barbecue. Now the thing is, I don’t usually have many barbecues these days, high meat content meals are not to be recommended too often. Isn’t it always the way, the nicest tasting foods are not always the best for you. It would have been nice to enjoy a glass of wine too but I was driving. All in all a nice day.
