Saturday…reprise

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 17, 2009

So far things are going well. I had my hands-free system checked and it is alright. However it seems that my cellphone is the problem. The guy suggests I connect to the Internet and download an update to my phone. Good idea I thought and I have the connecting lead but cannot locate the CD that came with the phone! As it happens though I may be entitled to a new phone as I have a line rental. My phone company gives me the opportunity for an upgrade every eighteen months and as I declined their last offer I feel sure I would get a new phone. If not I can always buy one! Which ever way I decide to go hopefully the problem will be solved. It seems that technology and me are not compatable…LOL. Today I tried putting my computer on standby but a recent automatic Microsoft update is now preventing that from happening. Consequently I have to shut the computer down completely after every session. No problem with that except it takes forever to reboot! How did we manage before the advent of computers and cellphones? Anyhow I am dressed to go out for an early evening meal with my guest and then have a few drinkypoos later. Have a nice weekend everybody!

Saturdays.

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 17, 2009

Saturdays are for some a day of rest, a holy day, a day for football, rugby, golf and any other sport you can think of. It is a day for mowing the lawn, for gardening, for decorating, for painting the town red but usually it marks the end of the general working week, or does it? These days we live in a world of 24/7 and 7/7, no day it seems is special any longer. Traditionally in the western world, Sunday has been a religious day and the main day for resting but Saturday has always marked the end of the working week for the majority. People can please themselves on a Saturday and do whatever their hearts dictate. For myself it might mean going shopping or going to the pub and very occasionally, working. Today I decided to have one of those rare lie-ins in bed and had a late breakfast or early lunch. In the early afternoon I am having the ‘hands-free’ system in my vehicle checking which shouldn’t take too long and then later in the afternoon I have decided to ‘dine out’. Unusual for me to do that on a weekend unless it is a special occasion but today I am bucking the trend and doing something different. I might make a habit of doing something different on my weekends, who knows? Anyway I like my Saturdays and my Sundays too when I can please myself and not have to work. What will your Saturday bring for you?

Routine Humdrum.

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 16, 2009

‘Woke up got out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head.
Made my way downstairs and drank a cup
And looking up
I noticed I was late…..’

Famous words from ‘A day in the life’ by Lennon/McCartney.

Sound familiar? We do this or something similar every day of our lives. It’s like we are on a Merry-go-round. Same old routine, day in, day out. Nothing changes. Seasons come and seasons go. Every day brings the same old things with it. Ok, ok, we have to go along with it all for there is no alternative, is there? If we analyse our lives it all revolves around survival. We need to eat so we work to get food. We need to sleep so we find somewhere to rest. Everything else we do apart from these two things is superficial. They form the basic needs for our exsistence. However we have developed into beings that want something extra. We want fun, security, love, family, a home, possessions and lots more so we strive to obtain them and it puts us on a merry-go-round from which we cannot get off. At the end of our lives, when the merry-go-round stops for us, what we have achieved is meaningless. All we have really done is to follow a routine and lead a pretty much humdrum exsistence. Oh yes, we flavour it with little moments of self indulgence and it is only these diversions which make it all bearable. What little diversion are you going to indulge in today? A meal out with friends? A trip to the museum? A movie? A night on the town? Whatever you do, do something and get off the merry-go-round for a spell before it stops completely for you.

Hands free.

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 15, 2009

I kept hearing a ‘beep’ over my radio every few minutes as I drove along. I received a call on my cellphone but the radio kept on playing. It appeared my ‘hands free’ system wasn’t working. Being self employed it is important that I don’t miss phone calls so when I am driving the hands free system is essential. So off I went to have it checked out. I thought it was a simple case of re-paring but it might be something else. The guy advised a proper check up which will be done Saturday afternoon. I am at a loss as to where the receipt is to prove I purchased it and it is still under guarantee. If I cannot find it the bill will be £100. If I can find it the bill will be zero! Typical, although you’d think the store would have a record of my purchase but they insist on a receipt. I suppose they just can’t be bothered looking in a file. Bet they would if it was the taxman asking!

No tea!

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 14, 2009

After a small breakfast of porridge with fruit and a pineapple drink off I went to work. I spent six and a half hours continuously working and sorting out the electrical circuits in a group of outbuildings in the rear of somebody’s house. I stopped only to visit the toilet a couple of times. I wasn’t offered even a cup of tea during the whole time. I cannot remember the last time that somebody didn’t offer me a drink at work. I was a little bit put out by that. I would never employ someone without making sure they at least had a drink every so often. Perhaps I should have simply gone home as I live only a few minutes away or had lunch out for an hour. I don’t usually eat during my working day unless there is a gap between jobs and even then I often don’t bother but I do like to have a drink. I drank water.

What a day!

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 13, 2009

Some months ago I wrote ‘Nothing is going right’. Well today has been one of those days. What a day! Started off this morning and customer couldn’t accomodate me as his wife was ill and he needed to take her for treatment. No problem but I think he should have phoned me and let me know just to save the wasted journey. He admitted as much himself. I arranged to go later in the day. In the meantime I purchased a couple of items for another job I had scheduled for the afternoon or earlier if I could get there. That opportunity presented itself so off I went. When I arrived at the house the woman had changed her mind and didn’t want the job doing! Talk about being ignorant! You’d think she might have told me beforehand. The materials I’d purchased will be used another day so that’s not a problem. What is the problem is the attitude of some people when they mess you about. It doesn’t happen often, thank goodness, else I’d go nuts! Driving about to these jobs I had several pedestrians walk out in front of me, drivers making sudden turns across my path or stopping for no apparent reason in front of me. I’m amazed I got through it all without mishap. To top it all the guy who’s wife was ill (he had previously postponed my appointment twice) was in a rush and expected me to do the job faster than I could manage. I told him it will take as long as it takes but that I would try and accomodate him. The job wasn’t particularly difficult as it happened but even so it did take time. I despair sometimes. I wonder what tomorrow will bring? In a way I am happy that things don’t go smoothly all the time. It would be extremely boring if it did.

Quizzical.

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 13, 2009

Tonight is Quiz night at the pub. I enjoy going to these events occasionally. They show me just how ignorant I am! I don’t know about you but whenever I partake in a quiz I am amazed at some of the questions posed. It’s a wonder anyone can answer them but some do! All I can say is they must never go out except to the Library. It’s all meant to be just for fun but some people take the whole thing too seriously. Some people will visit several pubs during the week soley to join in a quiz. I think once a week is enough for me and even then I don’t go every week. Do you do Quizzes?

I’m loving it!

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 12, 2009

I just wrote the title and accidentally clicked it so it got posted before I could write the content! Mmmm…….Might be that I am pi**ed….? Well, yes I’ve had a drink or two today. Went out for a late lunch….now there’s a surprise. Anyway as I was saying…LOL……..I’m loving it! Now you are wondering what it is exactly that I am loving. Yes? No? Well life really, that’s all. We get tied up in the things we do, our personal lives, our family, our friends, our work but when we take time out and really, I mean really think about things, don’t you find that life is so wonderful? Well I think it is. Today I have met some really lovely people and have had such a nice day. This morning I had two jobs to do and have left my customers very happy with what I’ve done for them. That is special to me. I want my customers to be happy with my work and to that extent I refuse payment if they are not satisfied. If they are satisfied I am too. When, later, I indulge myself, I can rest assured that I have earned my free time. So I am just loving it! Here I am back home and ready to go out for the evening and what happens? More phone calls, more jobs, more customers. Hopefully I can accomodate them all but if not I hope they will call on me again. Life is great. Life is wonderful and I’m loving it! Are you?

Oh well, I got it wrong.

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 11, 2009

Today is my ex’s birthday so yesterday I bought her a couple of presents. Both items of clothing, which she likes but unfortunately I bought the wrong size! You’d think I would have known the correct size now wouldn’t you? After all I have known her for almost 38 years! Seems some things go by the wayside. I erred on the right side though and bought smaller sizes than she wears. There will be no problem in changing them thank goodness. How many things do you get wrong these days? No doubt getting older has something to do with it and maybe in a few more years, if I survive that long, I will be getting everything wrong eh? LOL. In the meantime I stumble along getting it right once in a while………….

Look into my eyes…

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 10, 2009

I was sitting watching television after returning from a brief spell of work and shopping (I was buying my ex. a birthday present). Anyway there I was relaxing before I having lunch. I was looking at two people talking. They were obviously old friends and were having an intimate conversation. One of the women, for they were women, had her back to the camera and all I could see was her friend’s face. As she was talking her eyes were darting about as she scanned her friend’s face. You could see the love she had for her just by watching her eyes. We all do this subconciously when we communicate with others but of course not all situations will be one involving love. We look into each other’s eyes and ‘see’ the person, not simply their face but their soul. We can discover volumes of information about somebody just by looking into their eyes. I have often wondered why this is so but we reveal clues about ourselves by the way our eyes react in different situations. Very slight variations can reveal many things about us. When we talk to somebody we don’t look at their feet, hands, arms or anything else, we look into their eyes and thereby their souls. We can tell if they are being honest with us or how sincere they are when we look into their eyes. This is where the real conversation or connection is made.
Look into my eyes…………………………….Love

The fire’s lit.

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 9, 2009

Tonight and feeling a bit cold, I lit my gas fire for the first time since early Spring. Daytime temperatures are just about bearable now but as night falls it is dropping to 10 deg. where I live. That is too cool to sit around in. I don’t mind cool weather personally or even cold weather but when I am at home sitting I don’t want to be wearing an overcoat! It will get colder though and it will be next year before I can turn down the heat. Here in the UK we have just been informed on the news that we can expect our fuel bills to rise by possibly 60% (relatively) over the next ten years. That will be a considerable rise. It isn’t really surprising though, we are used to mad price rises here. I find it strange that more effort isn’t being applied in developing sustainable electrical energy before it is too late. We have many wind turbine ‘farms’ producing ‘free’ energy. The only cost is the initial outlay and maintenance but the use of this kind of energy should drive down the cost to the consumer. There is a long way to go to make this and other systems such as hydro-electric stations really viable alternatives to nuclear or coal systems which have a negative impact on the environment. I may never see prices coming down in my lifetime, has anyone? One day things might improve but in the meantime, the fire’s lit to keep me warm!

Yet another one.

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 8, 2009

Driving through my home town this morning I was able to look more at the shops than I would normally otherwise be able to do. There wasn’t much traffic about in the main street and as I looked about I could see many of the shopping outlets closed due to the financial recession. This morning I saw yet another outlet closed which only a few days ago was trading. There are still many businesses making an effort and some appear to be doing better than others. I say ‘appear to’ because without knowing the real facts it could be that even they are struggling. Although things look gloomy, conditions could be worse and I don’t think we are experiencing as deep a recession as we have in the past but nevertheless some people must still be finding it difficult to survive. I am very fortunate in that I seem to be getting regular requests for my services. I suppose there wil always be those among us who have the spare cash to spend even in difficult times. I think this is what is needed to keep the economy moving. It is sad to see yet another shop having to close though because fewer people can afford those extra luxuries. One day all will be back to normal I guess but in the meantime we have to struggle on.

There is no escape!

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 7, 2009

Today I finished work at 12.15 so I decided to dine out for lunch. Those of you who know me will understand that this is something I do on a regular basis, I treat myself and my ex. to lunch. Today after an extended lunch I asked to be dropped off at my local pub for a couple of hours. That duly done I was having a nice time chatting to different people when, four hours later my ex. returned to collect me. Not at my request I might add but she said that I’d had a couple of phone calls at home regarding electrical work. So off I went home to follow up on the calls. There is no escape it seems. I am destined to work till I drop! Anyway I got the jobs and have scheduled them for tomorrow and next week. Well it pays for my beer tokens doesn’t it?

Rain, rain, rain……..I feel fine.

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 6, 2009

I got soaked today. Not surprising really, it hasn’t stopped raining all day but it has been quite warm and humid with it. Rain, rain, rain but I feel fine. I heard a remark from an English comedian on the television tonight and he was describing what the older generation talk about each time he met any of them. ‘All they talk about is how hot, cold, wet, damp, foggy, humid, dry the weather is’, he said. It is becoming the norm for many people to pass remarks about the weather. Try getting through the whole day without hearing someone you meet mention the weather or you yourself mentioning some aspect of it. You might be amazed at what you find. For a long time now I have decided that the weather is something we should simply accept. I got wet today but I feel fine. I didn’t give it a second thought. It was raining, I went out in it and I got wet. End of story. I didn’t rush back indoors and moan about it or even mention it but the occupant of the house simply had to say something. It’s like an obsession, it’s ingrained into some people’s exsitence, it’s something to talk about, it’s something to moan about. For heaven’s sake it’s just the weather!

Well we’re off again!

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 5, 2009

…And so starts another week on the treadmill. A bright and sunny Monday morning in October sees the start of my week. I’ve been out already and brushed my driveway clear of pine needles and fallen cones then off to do a small job, fill up my van with deisel and now back home chilling out. I have work scheduled on two days more this week, so far that is! I never know when somebody is going to call so I have to be at the ready. On Thursday evening I have arranged a dinner for six in a restaurant twenty or so miles away to celebrate my ex’s. birthday on Sunday. I am looking forward to that. We had more of us last year and had a great time eating, drinking and dancing the night away but this year we are only doing the meal……..and drinks of course!
