Yesterday my cellphone started making gurgling sounds. It was informing me that the battery was almost drained. Usually the battery lasts a couple of days but I have been having difficulty lately with the chargers lead. If it was bent a certain way the charger couldn’t send power to the phone. Eventually, today in fact, it gave up the ghost completely! Not only that but the phone drained of power so quickly because the screen remained fully illuminated even when in idle mode! A few months ago I had experienced problems with the Bluetooth connection to the ‘hands free‘ system in my vehicle so that each time I drove it I had to connect the phone manually. My phone was due for replacement under contract and as I need it mainly for business I went into town this afternoon and arranged for a replacement. Ten minutes after I arrived at the shop I was leaving with a new phone. Naturally the old Sim card was fitted into the new phone but it appears my contacts were not saved on it! Evidently they were on the phone memory which couldn’t now be accessed because the battery couldn’t be recharged. So it means I have to place them in the new phone manually! Oh well. I got a better deal with the new phone, same allowances for texts and voice as I had before but 5,000 minutes free Internet access each month too. Not that I will use that facility, in fact I know I won’t. When I am out with my phone I do not have the time to browse the Internet because I am busy working, driving, shopping, dining out or socialising and so on. I use the Internet solely when I am at home. So now I have to start again with this new phone learning how to use it.

During the course of any week I browse through some of my old posts. When I look at the statistics for this blog each day I see that some of my readers also look at old posts I have written. Presumably they are following tags of course but I simply go straight to my post history and browse that way. I notice a couple of things in doing this. First of all I notice just how many posts I have written in such a relatively short time. They amount to at least one post per day since the blog’s inception. The next thing I notice is how my writing skills have improved over that same period, helped along by the proof reader of course! Thirdly I find that the subject matter is fairly diverse, I would hate to think that my posts had become stagnant through lack of diversity. This is why I do not major on the one subject. Yes, I will write on certain things quite often, work, life, religion, events in my day and many other things because I feel it makes for a more interesting blog. When I browse my old posts it sometimes helps me to write something new.
This morning I have been reading the ‘Good News‘ magazine which is posted to me each month. Several subjects are touched upon in the publication such as (in this issue), ‘Has America Lost Its Way’? ‘The Magnificent Millenium’, ‘A World Held Captive’ and in the supplement which is produced for the UK and European readership, ‘The Economy’, ‘A World Beyond Today’ and ‘When Will God Intervene’? Often the subject matter is not specifically ‘religious’ although explanations regarding world events point to prophetic writings in Scripture and from this we get a much clearer understanding of the direction where things are going. It’s like watching a movie whilst already knowing the plot and the outcome. The amazing thing is that what was written is actually happening before our eyes! I digress. This post was not meant to be about religion. The point I make is that inspiration can come from any direction, even the past. I may read something from my old posts and be inspired to write something new. Today I have been reading the ‘Good News’ but it could be any magazine or any other thing which gives me inspiration. Sometimes it pays to look back and reflect on things.

Smokers are a dying breed
And so are they who take the weed
Alcohol is not much good
As is eating the wrong food
We might indulge in some of these
Whilst never feeling ill at ease
But some take things a little far
And end as ash inside a jar.

I was just sitting quietly after lunch doing nothing in particular and the above thought, the whole poem, popped into my head. It got me thinking about how many of us abuse our bodies by indulgence or over-indulgence in some things we perhaps should not if we are truly concerned about our health. Some things we imbibe can be very harmful to us and can cause irreparable damage either in the short-term or gradually over the passage of time. We live for the moment sometimes when perhaps we should be more careful. Now I am not a kill-joy and I can stand accused with the rest in certain indulgent habits, too much wine for instance but I do take stock and try not to overdo things. I consider myself to be reasonably fit for somebody my age. I have an active job, when I get the work that is and I take exercise a couple of times a week. I try to eat sensibly, low-fat, plenty of fruit and vegetables and so on and I avoid eating foods I know are bad for me. I see people stuffing themselves with all sorts of junk and I wonder if they realise the damage they are causing to themselves in the process. Today for instance I saw a rather large lady, very much overweight, sitting at a bus-stop smoking a cigarette. I saw three things wrong in that. One, she was way too far overweight, two, she was smoking and three, she was waiting for a bus when she could perhaps have been walking instead. In today’s society there is no excuse for not being aware of the dangers to our health through bad lifestyles. Some people are concerned about their health whilst others are seemingly not bothered. Here in the UK it has been suggested recently that people who are overweight or who smoke or who are on drugs be given a financial incentive to quit their habits or lose weight. That money would come from the government‘s coffers, actually from the taxes the rest of us contribute. Personally I think it an ill-conceived idea and a unecessary burden on the rest of us who do look after ourselves. I’m not saying here that those in dire need because of problems they have no control over shouldn’t be helped but there are many spongers about who think society owes them a living. They couldn’t care less how they treat their bodies and expect the Health Service to make things right for them when they begin to suffer as a consequence of their own indulgences. They should worry about their health and take more care of themselves in the first place. What say you reader? Take care of yourselves now won’t you?

This morning I had to go and lay in some wiring for a lady who is having a conservatory built at the rear of her house. When I got there I found that the sub-floor, walls and floor joists had all been done. The two guys doing the job, father and son came shortly after. Their task today is to begin fixing the windows and roof. They live only a very short distance from the job and are friends with the client. When I was introduced to them as the electrician they were intrigued. More than that, they couldn’t do enough to help me in my job where it was easier for two people to install the wiring into the walls than for just myself. I would obviously need to do everything myself if nobody offered assistance, it just would have taken longer. They were so kind to me and went out of their way to be friendly. Very nice guys. I have this effect on men for some reason…..LOL. Anyhow I finished as far as I could go and I will return later in the week or maybe next week to install the power outlets and connect to the house wiring. I needed to visit the wholesale outlet to buy in more materials, mostly just for van stock so I did my shopping and arrived home before noon. Nothing is happening on the house works today so I decided to eat out whilst the opportunity was there. Tomorrow is another day and who knows what may happen? These days I take each day as it comes. I do plan ahead but nothing is written in stone. I’ve grown out of the panic, crisis, worrying stage of life, it just wasn’t worth it! Life to me now is more a case of ‘Que sera, sera’, with perhaps some very nice guys thrown in.

There was one thing you can say about me, apart from many others and that is I am reliable. If I say I will do something, I will do it. If we agree on something I will not let you down. It is in my nature to be like this, it is who I am. Unfortunately this isn’t always so with many people. If I make arrangements with people I expect them to respond and not let me down. I expect honesty and reliability. Until about six weeks ago I was having electrolysis but now that has stopped until I decide to continue. The girl who was doing the electrolysis has let me down. On her last visit I paid her in advance for six sessions, she gave me one session and has not returned on our agreed appointment date which was about six weeks ago now. Naturally I thought she had forgotten and I waited for her call but none came. I have left messages on her phones and have spoken to somebody over the phone asking to speak with her and left a message with them but have not received an acknowledgement. I know where she lives so it appears I have to visit her to see what is wrong. I can understand if somebody cannot keep appointments for reasons of illness or family problems but I think it discourteous not to contact people to let them know. Now I am wondering if she has done a moonlight flit and I am not the only one she’s let down.
I get let down and have been let down many times in my life. I tend to give people the benefit of my doubt and I am usually unwilling to think the worse of them. I am too soft and easy-going I suppose, always expecting people to have the same standards in dealing with others as I do. I do wonder why some people treat others they way they do and how they would feel if people treated them the same way. Perhaps this is the problem. Perhaps those who act this way have themselves been wronged in their past. Do unto others as you would have them do to you is sound advice which the majority of us no doubt follow. It is sad that some just don’t see it!

Yesterday I had to return to see my dentist, a round trip of about 45 miles. She was to fit the crown I needed on one of my teeth. I arrived around 30 minutes too early which I suppose is understandable because of the distance involved getting there and because it is never easy predicting what the traffic is going to be like at any given time of the day. I went to the waiting room and sat down. There were two other people there. It was 1 o’clock and my appointment was at 1.30. I waited five minutes and during that time the other two patients were voicing their thoughts about being kept waiting. Evidently they had been there some time. Just then the dentist came upstairs. She smiled at me and beckoned me into her surgery. I stood up and followed her, politely apologizing to the other patients. Perhaps they were too early for their appointments and mine preceded theirs, who knows? I almost never get to see my dentist or doctor before my appointed time. This was a first for me and I was pleased. During my drive back home I received a phone call (I have a hands-free system installed) from a would-be client asking if I could do a job for her. On finding out where she lived I told her that I could call in on the way home as she lived more or less on the same route. When I arrived I discovered that the job wasn’t difficult and it didn’t require me to be ‘properly dressed’, after all I wasn’t particularly dressed for work as they say! I suggested that I do it immediately. So that’s what I did. Now that was a pleasant surprise because I had resigned myself to having no work for the day due to my dental appointment being around noon. The job took a mere half hour for which I was well paid.
I have been waiting for E’s nephew to return to lay the concrete and fill the buttress he’d built with concrete also but yesterday he came by to do it, albeit rather late in the day at 4.30. The weather hasn’t been that good and he did have other commitments so I guess he took the opportunity when it arose and made a start. Hopefully he will finish it today as he promised.
Later in the evening my eldest son paid us a visit and stayed for a while. I encouraged him to have a meal (we had already eaten) before he went home so that he wouldn’t have to start cooking later. He is at work early today so he needed to get his sleep. His wife is spending a day or two ‘camping out’ with her Brownie Troup. I say camping out but in fact they will all be indoors. It is nice to see them both whenever they call but they don’t usually stay for long, so it was nice for him to stay a bit longer for a change.

On a job I was working on in someones house a few weeks ago the guy was very chatty and asked all sorts of questions, some pertaining to the job but some pertaining to my faith. The guy was open-minded but non-committal. He couldn’t understand why I believed in the things I believe in, God, Jesus Christ, Salvation, Repentance and so on. I explained to him that I came to believe in these things after being an atheist for most of my life. He then asked why he seemed unable to do the same. I told him that by myself I could never arrive at my present state of belief. I told him that it is by God’s Holy Spirit that we come to Him, it is having the Holy Spirit within us that makes it possible to confess that Jesus is Christ and Lord. It is our spirit agreeing with the Holy Spirit that we come to believe. It is all about God’s calling. You see, I had denied God for so long and yet He called me to Him, although at that time I was unaware of that fact. I found myself inexplicably reading the Bible one day and I read it from beginning to end. After I had done that I found myself wanting to know more, in fact I couldn’t get enough! Strange for somebody who had never wanted to know God or even believed in Him but He had other ideas. I know a few people who proudly say they have no belief in a deity and some who try their best to deny even the possibility that there is one. They will put their trust in something else instead. They are doubters. They are the kind of people who, after witnessing a miracle would deny it ever happened, turn a blind eye or try to explain it away using the sciences. Many eminent scholars have tried to disprove the Bible and the existence of God but they could not prove anything. They rely on logic for their arguments but they don’t perhaps realise is that God is Spirit, He is not of this world and He cannot be explained away using physical science. God is Spirit and we must worship Him in spirit. When God’s Spirit is in us we act differently and our purpose in life changes completely. Our whole attitude changes and many of the things we once cherished hold little of value to us any longer because we have something far more valuable than gold or diamonds. Take a look at this verse from the New Testament:
Christ the Wisdom and Power of God
18For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
You see from this verse that those who are unbelievers think the message that Christ suffered for us to know (and they don’t know what that message is because they don’t want to know) is foolishness. If somebody told you that there was a million pounds in suitcase waiting for you to open wouldn’t you go and see if it was true? Again in the verse above, who is it that is being saved, what from and why? Well if you never check it out you’ll never know. All you need to do is seek Him, listen to what He says (He speaks in many ways, even through these ramblings!) and then invite Him in.
I make no excuses for this post. I promote God’s Word here from time to time so if you are not interested pass it by. The choice is always yours.

My plan today was to do the two jobs I had before returning home later in the day. I left the house around 8.45 and was back home at 11.15 despite the second job being 14 miles away! I know I am quick, people tell me that too but sometimes I excel even my own expectations. So I have the whole day to myself. As I write this it is almost 1 o’clock. Already I have spent an hour on my guitar and had a bite to eat. Now I am thinking of what to do next.
I don’t know what it is about me but I am usually quick when doing anything. I rush through things, without cutting corners I have to say, because I want to see them finished. Some people take their time but I am not one of them. When I tackle a job I can already see it completed in my mind’s eye. When problems get in the way it annoys me but I expect them to appear. Very rarely do I find a task without any problems whatsoever. Having worked continuously for more than 48 years, except for breaks (lol), I pretty much know what to expect when tackling a job, that also means jobs outside of my vocational occupation as an electrician. You and I would call it ‘experience’. I wonder why some people do things contrary to what I would call ‘common sense‘ but then I realise that they simply lack the experience in life, just like I once did. Academics are sometimes very clever people, of course not all of them are. They might be very intellectual and have great knowledge about things but many of them don’t know how to knock a nail in wood, to coin a phrase. It has nothing to do with their knowledge, it is simply a lack of experience. There are many things I cannot do and some things I can do but which take time to complete because of my lack of experience. Everything else I do I seem to do in double-quick time! It’s a little silly though sometimes because it can lead me to over-working myself or sitting around bored stiff! I realise that I should pace myself and get into a slower gear but hey, that’s who I am. At the very least I am motivated, once I start of course!

I was going to have an extra lie-in this morning but as is usual for me I got a phone call. Okay, it had turned 9 o’clock and perhaps I should have been up by then, at least during the working week! The lady told me that most of her lights were not working and the main switch (she meant the circuit-breaker for that circuit) wouldn’t reset. As she had an appointment with her doctor at 9.30 it gave me time to get up and get dressed. I got there around 10.30 and set about tracing the fault. Two hours later all was back in order and I was handsomely paid for my services. It was an unexpected bonus and most welcome. The reason she called me rather than another electrician was because I had done work for her mum and again for her sister. Evidently my fame (or reputation) had preceded me! I often receive opportunities for work in this way. I suppose it is nice to be remembered for all the right reasons. In my dealings with others I try to be fair and honest, especially where business is concerned. It ensures my credibility. In fact I like to think that I treat everyone this way, inside of business or in my personal life. I was brought up to believe that honesty is the best policy so at the very least I am honest with people. I can be relied upon too as far as that depends upon me.
Today I invited E out to lunch again and we went to a place we often go to about eight miles away. They have a carvery there every day. The meals are excellent and very reasonably priced. We eat there not especially for those reasons but we are always made to feel welcome. The staff is very friendly and obliging and we are greeted on sight. They have a reputation to uphold and they maintain it very well. Unless we go there a little late we often find it difficult to get a table. It proves how popular it is.
Yes, it is nice to be ‘famous’, to be remembered for the right reasons. Rather that than being ‘infamous’!

The one thing I like about these blog sites is the fact that I can see which of my posts are attracting most of the traffic. A day or so ago I placed a post about The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and to my amazement it attracted many visitors, no comments though but at least it appears to have been read. More importantly I think is that hopefully those who read it moved on to visit the link where five videos about the subject could be seen. Not many people believe in what is contained in the Bible and probably even less that which is contained in the Book of Revelation. The Book of Revelation was always a mystery to me and I could never understand it properly. In the last church I attended there was a pastor who was an excellent teacher and he attempted to explain what the book was about. Essentially it is a book about prophecy, that which is foretold to come. About one-third of the whole Bible is prophecy but the whole of Revelation is prophetic. Other books, Daniel in the Old Testament for instance foretell of things to come, even those mentioned in Revelation. Christ‘s birth was foretold in the book of Isaiah hundreds of years before it came about as do some of the Psalms written in King David and King Solomons times. Much of what was foretold has come to pass but much has yet to do so. Very few believe in prophecy until it actually happens but of course by then it could be too late. When I watched and listened to the five videos I verified the information from Scripture and the meaning of the prophesy became obvious. I can see all these things happening around me. What is astounding is that despite what prophecy says the world is taking no notice and consequently prophesy is being played out. The world is blind but that does not surprise me because the world can’t even learn from history. How then is it going to learn from prophecy? I know these things but no-one believes me!
Getting back to specific posts being well-read, there are quite a few of my old posts which are frequently read. I have either caught the reader’s imagination or they simply like re-visiting the post! Either way I thank them but everything I write here is for the reader’s benefit. Enjoy.

It isn’t me at all but quite often these days I find myself sitting around doing nothing! I’ve not much work to do away from home and I suppose I could find something to do at home, there are many things I could do there but today, well, I can’t be bothered. The day is trickling on by and I am letting it. I get weary of the same old routine. Remember routines? Ah yes! It is good to be able to sit on one’s butt once in a while and do absolutely nothing. Well I cannot do absolutely nothing really so I play guitar, read, watch tv and do lots of thinking. Some of my best thoughts come when I am on the treadmill and that was always the case when I used to go running, especially in the woods or along the beach before dawn.
The guy came to look at the leaking roof. Oh yes, we have a leaking roof even though it was recently worked on to eliminate potential problems. He cannot do anything for us for a few days so I am hoping the weather stays fine and dry. Tomorrow I am out and about and will most probably have more inclination to do so! My next glass of cider awaits at the moment so I will go and get it…………….LOL

Many of my readers confess they are not ‘religious‘ or that they have ’other’ beliefs. For myself, I believe in one God, the Maker of all things and in His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ through whom all things were made and in God’s Holy Spirit without whom I could not believe at all! On my front page you will see a section under Religion where there are links to church organisations of one sort or another. Now I do not prescribe to many of these ‘churches’ views on all matters concerning the Faith but in essence they are all followers of the same God, they just disagree on certain points. That said, there is a wealth of useful information on their sites for those who might be interested in learning more. One particular group who call themselves the restored Church of God have short videos available for downloading.(www.worldtocome.org/home.html) One group of videos centres on the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, a series of five 30 minute videos explaining the Four Horsemen in the book of Revelation. If you take the time to watch them you will be surprised at what you see and hear. It may make you think twice about this world and the state that it is in. I can only encourage you but the choice is yours. Open your hearts to the possibility that you could be wrong about life in this world today.

Well not literally but they are falling inside the house! I was sitting quietly having my breakfast and E suddenly got up from her chair and opened the door that leads into the rear longe. ‘Listen’, she said. At first I couldn’t hear anything but then it came, drip…….drip…….drip. The door stands beneath a cavity wall which reaches up to the roof another two floors up. After breakfast I went upstairs to have a look. There is a loft access panel in one of the top rooms so I switched on the light which is located in the loft area and went inside. Lo and behold there was the roof timber all wet. The water was slowly running along the inclined timber and into the cavity wall. The guy who did the roof work for us had replaced a section of the lead gully but it appears there is still a problem. I left a message on his telephones for him to call. The problem he has now though is that the roof is four storeys up in the rear garden and there isn’t any scaffolding erected. Even if he approaches the task from the front of the house it is till three storeys up there! It looks as if we will be having more rain over the next twenty-four hours and then two or three days of dry weather. I hope he can get the problem sorted by then. Such is life eh?

Before you answer my question think again. Does your life revolve around a more or less rigorous routine, one that never changes? I never used to think that I was following a routine, it just hadn’t occurred to me. The fact is though that I do. My routine has changed somewhat over the years but nevertheless it is still a routine, maybe a lot more flexible than it once was but still a routine. It is an unavoidable part of our lives. It is something we cannot do without. Many people resist change but many also embrace it. For myself, I think change is unnecessary if it is done for the sake of it but usually change takes place because we see a different way of doing things, perhaps to save time but more usually to save expense! Whatever changes are made they all become routine in our lives. Today has been a rest day for me, that is rest from work and in the day my usual routine changes, or does it? In fact very little has changed. All the other things I usually do apart from work remain unchanged, it just means I have more freedom to do what I please. We are creatures of habit trapped in a world full of routine. We take little excursions away from our usual everyday lives but we always return.

The mole has been at it again! Today I went to do the job I was supposed to be doing yesterday but was postponed. If you remember the client’s nephew had died so she asked for me to reschedule. This was one of those jobs that could only be done one way and that was under the floor! Covering my pretty clothes with an overall, putting on my hat, gloves and boots, off I went below with my flashlight. If you can imagine a maze full of spaghetti and its floor covered in rubble that pretty much describes what it was like down there. Initially I had difficulty in getting into the hole because of my bosom but they do ‘give way’ fortunately! I was down there for about twenty minutes but it saved hours of work had it been necessary to go a different route. This meant that I completed the whole job in super-fast time and was able to get back home before noon. So what was I going to do with the afternoon? I took E out to lunch again. Actually she takes me as she is doing the driving. We didn’t want to go too soon so I spent time getting changed and then playing my guitar whilst she did some washing and hanging out some clothes. So off we went into the countryside to find a nice place to eat and ended up in a place we hadn’t been to for quite a while. The meal was excellent and we spent a little time there before driving back home. E chose to follow the coastal road when we got back to our town but there were signs indicating that the road was closed further ahead. In the distance we saw two helicopters doing aerial manoeuvres above the beach. Then we realised that they were practicing for the two-day air show held this weekend. Many people flock to these displays in which the RAF fly planes both old and new over the beach and surrounding seafront. Much of the display can be seen from our upstairs windows so nowadays I don’t bother going down to the beach to watch it. When we arrived home E discovered that one of our downstairs windows wasn’t properly closed although it was locked. Our youngest son, who is staying with us at the moment, had locked himself inside the house. The inner door of the two front doors had been locked by ourselves before we went out but we hadn’t closed it shut. The idea was for him to close it behind him as he went out later. He does have a key for this door but he leaves it in his car for some apparent reason. So he unlocked the window, climbed out and fetched his key then climbed back in again, although he could have used the front door to get back inside! In his absent-mindedness he didn’t close the window properly before locking it. That’s kids for you, yes I know he’s 25 but he’s still a kid to me! Anyway I shall not be ‘high flying’ this weekend, I plan to have a complete rest!
