I hate this time of year, no, not the weather!

Posted by Shirley Anne on November 30, 2011

Despite it being very windy, occasionally raining and unusually warm, it isn’t the weather I dislike. In fact I love Autumn, No, it is the approach to Christmas. I hate the advertising on television which promotes and encourages unnecessary spending. Assumptions are made that everyone is looking forward to the day and accordingly promotes good times using carefully selected music and filming. Many people will be feeling left out of things because they are poor or have no family to share the time with, maybe some will be living alone. Whilst I do not agree now with holding Christmas festivities when once I did, I do realise that I am in the minority. I have written about this on several occasions here in the past year or thereabouts so I won’t re-iterate again. Christmas isn’t about the birth of a saviour anymore, it has become a hedonistic and lavish experience for most people. People will say that Christmas is for children and they want to make sure that their children enjoy the now ‘magical’ time with plenty of presents and good food. That wasn’t the original reason for celebrating Christmas. The real reason for celebrating Christmas although believed to be sincere is probably debatable in light of what Scripture dictates but nevertheless even that is ignored in favour of the modern empty version. The atmosphere surrounding the approach to the day is full of hype and is all commercially generated. It is all so false and without meaning. Is it any wonder that people do not believe in the true message that Christmas was supposed to convey? They want the tinsel, the bright lights, the food and drink, the ‘good times’, the short-lived season of ‘goodwill to all men’ and then return to their hum-drum lives the following week where none of the ‘goodwill’ goes with them. I see signs in the back windows of cars which read, ‘A dog is not just for Christmas, it is for life’, in an attempt to curb the practice of dumping the animal at the RSPCA once the novelty has worn off. Well ‘Jesus isn’t just for Christmas’ either but how many even consider that, or even believe it?Adorazione del Bambino (Adoration of the Child...

Looking my best at all times

Posted by Shirley Anne on November 29, 2011

Dress CodeMany of the women I know do not take pride in themselves at all times. Unless they are going out socializing or to special occasions they don’t seem to bother looking their best. Now I am not advocating that they are dressed-to-kill at all times when in their waking hours or even that they should dress that way at any time but I can’t understand why they don’t bother with their appearance sometimes. For myself I couldn’t leave my bedroom without trying to look my best for what I have planned for the day, whether that be at work or being ready for work should I get the call, or going out for the day somewhere. Even when at home at other times I always try to look my best. At weekends, when I am not usually working, I dress in smart, casual clothes and I wear make-up every day, whether at work or not. I take pride in my appearance because it gives me confidence when I know I am looking as well as I can and presenting to the world. I see women and men too who couldn’t care less what they look like when they are outside or even at home. The majority of people do take care of themselves and the way they dress but having said that many don’t bother dressing to suit the occasion either. I can understand why some establishments insist on a certain dress code because if the decision was left to the individual many just wouldn’t bother making the effort. There’s nothing worse than dining out at a really good restaurant and seeing people lounging about in sloppy clothes and jeans. Well I think so. I will continue to look my best whenever and wherever I go out and whenever I remain at home.

A comedy of errors or a conspiracy?

Posted by Shirley Anne on November 28, 2011

Longcase repaired

I don’t know if I should call it a comedy of errors or a conspiracy but rather weird things happened last Thursday. I had nothing planned for the day so I decided to get up a little early and go for a run on my treadmill. After that I bathed and then spent most of the morning in my room doing things a girl should do to keep herself looking her best. Eventually I got downstairs at around 11 o’clock and spent a short time on my computer. I received a call to do an electrical job so off I went to do that.  I had to replace a faulty pir floodlight on an outbuilding at the rear of a house. It wasn’t an easy job to reach because of the shrubbery and trees beneath it but I managed. When it came to switch on the new light it wouldn’t work, the lamp was faulty. I had to drive to a local store to buy another one and returned to fit it. This time I thought it must work but it didn’t so I checked the circuit and discovered the fuse had blown. A minute later all was well. A minor irritation. I returned home and in the late afternoon it began to get dark. The light in the porch wasn’t lit and I wondered why. A little background information is required here. Outside the front of my house is a small device located high up the wall. When it becomes dark it puts a supply on to the porch light. The following morning as it becomes light again it switches off that supply. However the supply is not left on throughout the entire night. The device calculates the time between dusk and dawn and switches off for the majority of that time. So it might switch on at 4 o’clock in the afternoon as it does get dark that early this time of the year but it will automatically switch off at around 1 o’clock in the morning and stay off until an hour or so before dawn when it switches back on. As it get lighter the device then switches off. Quite a clever little device and it looks like one of those things you see atop street lights although the control is different for them. Now then, getting back to my porch light which wasn’t working. I was hoping that it was merely the lamp that was faulty and not the device outside so I tried one of the wall switches which can be used to manually switch on the light if necessary and found that the lamp still did not work. Now the light itself hangs high from the ceiling and requires a nine foot ladder to reach it. There is an aluminium ladder on top of my van but that is always kept locked but the van was in the garage and would have to be driven out if I was to get at that ladder. I chose to bring the steel ladder up from the cellar instead. That is a task all by itself! Either way I had to spend much time just getting the ladder out! I changed the lamp and all was well, then I returned the ladder to the cellar. Now I couldn’t remember if I had returned the wall switch to its normally off position because the light was now being supplied from the outside device. There is no way around that problem if I want to keep the manual switches for emergency use. Fast forward now to bedtime. I had to get up quite early on Friday in order to get to a job some distance away by 8.30 so I set the alarm to 06.15 and went to sleep around midnight. Usually I awake long before the alarm goes off but I use it in case one morning I don’t wake up in time. For some reason I got up after a short sleep and thought it was time to rise whilst all the time thinking to myself that I was still a bit tired. I went off to use the toilet along the landing from my room. At the end of the landing are the toilet and stairway down to the hall and as I walked along in the dark I noticed that the light was on downstairs so naturally I thought it must be morning because the device would have switched the light on a couple of hours before dawn, which at the moment is around 8 o’clock. I looked at the grandfather clock at the bottom of the stairs and it appeared to be reading 06.30. I went to the toilet and whilst sitting there, still tired, I thought about the manual switches and whether they were in fact holding the light on. I went downstairs and tried the switch that I had previously used the afternoon before. Low and behold the light switched off which meant that the outside device was switched off too and it wasn’t yet time for it to come back on. I looked again at the grandfather clock in the hall and saw that it was only 02.15! I really was tired and was glad to get back to bed for another four hours! Strange things happen when you are tired and it is so easy for the events of the day to throw you off course sometimes but I think it is all a conspiracy.

It’s hard saying no

The Valley of Decision

Image via Wikipedia

Do you find it easy to say the word no? Well obviously you don’t but if it was a question of letting someone down would you reconsider or would that depend on circumstances? I always remember my pastor saying ‘there is nothing wrong in saying no’. In church life you will find many people offering their services freely to benefit the church or the members in it and sacrificing their own time to do so but there comes a time when it is right to say no. At the other end of the scale you will also find those in the church who cannot find it in their heart to say yes. Overdoing things isn’t really a good idea for anyone, we all need time to ourselves to recharge our batteries as it were so that when the time comes to do our bit we are capable of doing it! I am at that stage in my life whereby I can say no more often in my occupational work which theoretically makes me more available for other things. I have to decline work for fear of burning myself out. People telephone me asking if I will do some electrical work for them and I have to make a quick decision as to whether I will take on the work or not. That depends on a few factors, one, the location; many people live outside my catchment area, that is the area in which I am prepared to work for it to be cost-effective or even desirable. Two, how much work I have scheduled. Three, how much work I have already done during that week; I need to find time for myself too. So sometimes I say no and have to make an excuse for saying so. When anyone asks something of me I have to make a decision one way or the other and that is true in anything in my life and no doubt in yours too. The thing is, do you feel guilty when saying no or can you justify your decision to yourself for saying no? Family members are sometimes the worse offenders for asking favours and making demands on your time but we make exceptions for them, sometimes to our detriment! So saying no shouldn’t be a problem for any of us and we certainly shouldn’t feel guilty for it, unless we are just being lazy!

CL1358+62, the farthest object in the observab...

Image via Wikipedia

One of my interests is in Astronomy. I have always been fascinated by the cosmos, how galaxies are spread out far and wide, so far and wide it goes beyond human understanding. The visible universe is so vast that normal measuring devices cannot successfully give us an idea of its true size. At the edges of visibility the galaxies are moving so fast away from our standpoint that even the light they have been producing cannot escape to reach us. It is presumed that just beyond what we can presently see there are such galaxies in existence, or were in existence once long ago. Observable galaxies at these tremendous distances have been measured at receding from us at more than half the speed of light. The distances are mind-boggling. Our moon sits at a distance from us of little as one and a half light seconds. The Sun is approximately eight and one-third light minutes away. When we measure the distances to the outer planets in our solar system we have to begin reckoning in light hours. Then there is the nearest star, Proxima Centaurus a satellite star of Alpha Centaurus which is approximately four and one-third light years away. There are thousands of millions of stars in our Galaxy, The Milky Way and we have to measure their distances in light years and parsecs. A parsec is around 3.26 light years and represents that distance at which an object would subtend a parallax angle of one arc-second. It is still a small amount of distance at 19 trillion miles or 31 trillion kilometres in the grand scheme of things. Some of the distant galaxies are umpteen trillions of miles away. In real terms they probably no longer exist as galaxies but simply of matter. When we look at anything we look at it as it was when the light emanating from it began its journey into our eyeballs. It is suggested that all the material which makes up the universe will at some time stop accelerating away from us and will then begin contracting to a single point. If you believe in the universe having been born into existence from ‘The Big Bang‘, which was a single point, then a contraction back to that single point is a definite possibility. What started the process has been debated by clerics and scientists over many generations. I believe that God produced matter from what didn’t previously exist as is claimed in Scripture. You may have your own theories on the subject. This ‘matter’, this substance that makes up the entire universe evidently can be squeezed into a pinpoint. If we look at matter itself it is composed of atoms which in turn are composed of protons, neutrons, electrons and a few other particles each according to the type of matter. However the bulk of the space that atoms and their orbiting components occupy is in fact empty space! It would appear that there is no such thing as a solid object when it is suggested that the tiniest fraction of any object is actual matter. Even the whole universe has been described as being able to fit inside a cube measuring a mere one or two inches if all that ‘free space’ were to be eliminated! So looking at it that way, we don’t exist, you don’t exist! Bears some thinking about considering how much value we place upon ourselves.

The Soap Opera Encyclopedia

Image via Wikipedia

I used to be a person who despised watching soap operas on television but in more recent times I find myself watching one or two of them. The most striking thing I notice in these programs is the way they portray how people deal with each other, more specifically how they treat each other. They say that soap operas are not true to life but in fact they are very much true to life. Admittedly much is crammed into the episodes and much is going on between the characters but when we analyse it all we can see that the things that go on are the same things that most of us experience or have experienced in our own lives. I wonder why people treat other people the way they do. Some people get along with almost anyone, others find it difficult to get along with anyone at all. People can be horrible toward some and yet at the same time be nice to others. Why are people horrible toward others and what pleasure do they get out of putting another down? As human beings we can be both nasty and kind, selfish and unselfish and we are selective in which is dealt to whom. What makes us hate one person and like another, be kind to one person and leave another out of it? If we analyse our behaviour we might find that we treat others in a way which is dependent on what we might gain from it. If someone is different from us we are often cautious in dealing with them but all the time we are looking to see what effect they will have upon us, whether beneficial or otherwise. We may not think about these things, they just come naturally. So when I look at soap operas do I see aspects of my own personality being portrayed or do I feel that I act in a completely different way? Do we think we have faults that should be worked upon or do we feel we are not behaving badly? Do we really treat our neighbours as we would have them treat us? Do we really love as we ought or do we select whom we should treat preferentially?

Road Rage (Dizzee Rascal song)

Image via Wikipedia

Looks like I used that title before but on a different subject. I am my worst enemy. Often I say jokingly that ‘I am passed my sell-by-date‘ or that ‘my shelf-life has expired’, new versions of ‘I’ve got one foot in the grave’ or ‘I’m in God‘s waiting room’. I laugh but the serious side of it isn’t really funny. Oh I can blame some of the things I do on my age with tongue in cheek but it is often down to a lack of forward thinking. A few weeks ago I wanted to cancel the automatic subscription facility on my Internet security provider account, which is Symantec. I have Norton 360 version 5 protecting my computer. What happened was this, I had purchased Norton 360 v4 before I had bought this computer and when I discovered that Norton 360 was pre-installed I kept hold of the disk version I had bought so that I could use that when renewing my subscription this year. Mistake number one. The present version is one up on the disk version, which I hadn’t noticed. I was having difficulty in locating the instructions to cancel the automatic subscription but the staff at Norton were able to help me. It turned out to be a very easy procedure but from the software it was easy to locate. Why they don’t make things easier I don’t know. The guy who dealt with my problem extended my old subscription by one calendar month so I got a bonus for my trouble. The present subscription was about to expire in 11 days so I took out the disk I had bought and loaded it. The screen display showed me that the disk version wasn’t as up to date as the one installed, which was the first time I’d realised my error. However it isn’t now possible to claim a refund on my original purchase of £59.99 which I could have done within 60 days. I don’t think I have a monkey’s chance now at over twelve months! I opened my Norton account and renewed my subscription for two years thus gaining a small discount on today’s prices (£124.99). The 11 days were added and now I have 741 days left at time of writing. Now back to the disk and the loss of £59.99. The only way out I can see is to sell it at a huge discount or give it away so that the other person can then update the product and thereby gain something from it. I should read the small print or have someone to hold my hand but that would be more of a distraction…..LOL. I have learned my lesson.

Cartoon showing baby representing New Year 190...

Image via Wikipedia

Well it looks like I am in business again. After a brief spell of ease I am beginning to rake in lots more work. Most of what I am doing will be to do with changing light fittings, you might say I will be on ‘light duties’ (an in joke) but I am also replacing switches and power points. This is a seasonal thing with people wanting  a make-over as far as electrical lighting is concerned on the run up to Christmas. I don’t mind, it gives me something to do that pays well! Occasionally I am asked to install extra power points at this time of year too, to accommodate fairy-lights and other things. Did you ever see advertisements urging the purchase of furniture before a certain date in order that it will be delivered before Christmas Day?  Is it any wonder folk get themselves in debt because they think the world will end on Boxing Day or that the furniture won’t be available thereafter? Of course that is why the advertisers lower their prices in the first place! The prices rise again once the holiday is over.  People do strange things around Christmas. A few years ago now, I expected very little work at the beginning of the new year because of the amount I had in the preceding month but this particular year I was inundated with it and in fact, as it turned out, that January  was the best month for the year as far as income was concerned. Not so these days though with the way the economy is just now but no doubt it will be business as usual, albeit only a little (?). Actually it looks as though I will be unavailable for a short time at the beginning of 2012 anyway as I am scheduled for jury service. We’ll see what happens. In the meantime I have plenty to do.

All in the balance

Posted by Shirley Anne on November 21, 2011

Throughout our lives we make choices, buy this buy that, save this or spend it, go here or go there, do this or do that. I could go on forever but making all these decisions every day do we miss out on something by the choices we have made? I often wonder about that. Scripture tells us to do all things in moderation and I think that is wise to do. A few days ago I was sitting at home in the afternoon with pretty much nothing to do and at such times I may open a bottle of wine and perhaps read or do something on the computer, maybe play some guitar, something to relieve the boredom! So what did I do? All of them! The question is which of them did I indulge in the most? Now you might be thinking it was the wine but in fact it was probably a balance between the guitar and the computer! Of course I had other minor things to do as well, not least of all preparing meals and such, oh and I did watch some television too. Whilst eating my evening meal, after drinking a full bottle of red wine, I was toying with the idea of opening another bottle! Now to be fair the first bottle was opened before three in the afternoon and my evening meal this night was after eight o’clock, more than five hours later. What did I do after my meal? Opened another bottle of course! Now don’t get the wrong idea, I don’t make a habit of doing this but it is nice to be able to make that decision whenever I might feel like doing so. As in all things in life we make choices and we balance our decisions so that we don’t overdo things. That sounds nice in theory but sometimes we get it wrong either accidentally or by choice. For those who are interested, no, I didn’t get drunk, I left half the second bottle for the following day. When this post gets published on Monday, that will be today, it will be my birthday. Actually that isn’t true, it is the anniversary of that day! No doubt I shall be imbibing more of the red nectar but again probably alone. Never mind, it’s just another day. Cheers Shirley Anne! Sometimes I feel closer to you

Posted by Shirley Anne on November 20, 2011

social (sciences)

Image by Paolo Margari via Flickr

Sometimes I feel closer to you. Yes you dear reader! I get quite lonely sometimes. My family is spread afar, my sisters live in another country, my brothers live reasonably close but I only see one of them and that only occasionally. The other brother might as well be on another planet as he has pretty much alienated himself from the rest of us. Both my parents died years ago. My sons, well one lives with his wife, naturally, the other has taken it upon himself to leave recently to live in his mate’s house. My ex and I are not on speaking terms right now and the only friends I have either live outside of this country or too far to be regular visitors. I am not looking for sympathy here by the way, no but I just point to the fact that those I’ve ‘met’ through blogging give me more of their time than those supposedly closer to me! One way of looking at it, a philosophical approach would be to say things will improve or I’ll die first! I am not taking bets on this one….LOL I remain as ever cheerful and never do I get depressed. I am a strong person in that respect but I also have a ‘live-in helper’. I think you know what I mean by that but if you don’t then look at my ‘religious’ posts. I have a lot of time on my hands these days, not much work to do in a professional capacity and the domestic situation is on hold untill I feel inclined to move on it. I could be tempted to fall into bad habits but I fight against it all of the time, my trips to the pub have taken a back seat but that is more to do with my lack of interest than anything else. Another aspect of my personality that you may not be aware of is that I have always been what people call ‘a loner’. I’ve never enjoyed being one of the crowd, going with the flow, doing what others do sort of person but I do nevertheless enjoy conversation and mixing socially. I suppose in these situations I feel more in control, having the choice of walking away rather than feeling obliged. It may have resulted me in not having  a lot of ‘mates’ but then I was never ’one of the boys’ now was I?

When does it become an intrusion?

Posted by Shirley Anne on November 19, 2011

Warning: This Area Contains Tobacco Smoke

Recently it has been proposed my the Medical Council that there should be a complete ban on individuals smoking in their vehicles. The reasons given were that the confined spaces give rise to the build-up of dangerous chemicals to the detriment of those present, especially children. Whatever your own personal views on this becoming law, do you think it is an unwarranted infringement on the personal rights of individuals or do you think it is a reasonable request for a civilised society in which the majority consensus is to be agreed with? Apart from the hazards just mentioned there is also the danger of possible accidents occurring because of a dropped cigarette. In recent years we have seen smoking being banned in places where people congregate and this was put in place to protect those who do not smoke from the atmosphere produced by those who do. Recognising the danger to the non-smoker made sense to remove the smokers from those places whenever they wanted to feed their habit. More people do not smoke than those who do. At present I think the figures quoted point to a 20% to 80% ratio. It seems only right then to enforce such a law. Despite the objections that this would cause a drop in custom for those in the catering industry, pubs and clubs and similar places the law was passed. I don’t think it has made any difference at all to the retail industry. However, banishing smoking from public places is one thing but to extend that ban to the privacy of one’s vehicle and even private homes (which has also been suggested as a possibility), is another. How far can government intervention go and what would be the  resultant backlash if they decide to follow these suggestions and legislate in favour of them? These propositions have already been made law in some parts of the world, like Australia and elsewhere I believe.

I might add here that I am a non-smoker but I am in favour of such legislation for vehicles but not necessarily in people’s private residencess.

Previous logo of BBC Radio 4 until 2007

Image via Wikipedia

When I am out in my little van driving off to the great beyond doing my electrical thing I have the radio switched on. Nothing new in that is there? I generally go through phases when it comes down to which station I tune into, it switches from Classic FM to Jazz FM, from Radio 1 or 2 to Radio 4 but whichever station I select it remains that one for a long time. Presently it is Radio 4 which for those who don’t know is a magazine style station. That means it has music and news, interviews and plays, a mixture and variety of things which I like. Driving to work on Tuesday I switched on to a program that had already started, an interview and I got that interested in it I pulled over before reaching my goal and listened to it until it finished about twenty minutes later. It didn’t interfere with my appointment as it finished just before I was scheduled to be there. The interviewer was talking to a woman. At first I couldn’t make out what the interview was about but it soon dawned on me that the woman was a transgendered person and was talking about her journey and how it affected those around her, not least of all her wife, children and family. Throughout the interview she was treated with the greatest respect and the whole interview was positive and encouraging for those, who like her, were going through the same trials and of course the public in general. She talked about her early years and the fact that she knew something was wrong with her assigned gender. She talked about her youth and how she didn’t fit in with her peers, how she met her wife and came out to her before they got married. Her wife was totally accepting. From what I heard I couldn’t make out if she was transvestite or non-op transgendered, not that makes any difference but I was curious. She seemed to indicate that having the operation was an option she was considering but I wasn’t certain about that. In any event the program ended so I will never know. The point I am making is not really about the details of the program but the fact that the subject was being discussed at all. With Cannel 4′s latest program ‘My Transsexual Summer’ and now this one on Radio 4, which admittedly was not a series, there seems to be an increased interest in transgender issues. Hopefully this will lead to a better understanding for those who know little about the subject and as long as the programs are conducted in a civilised, informative way without any hint of derision it should prove beneficial for all who have gender issues .

Notice the similarity in the colours of the old (2007) Radio 4 logo above and the one for the Transgender Portal below…….

Another brown envelope

Posted by Shirley Anne on November 17, 2011

Much as I am filled with a certain amount of trepidation when I receive brown paper envelopes I was taken by surprise this afternoon when opening another one. Rather than being one bringing shall I say less welcome a message, this one was informing me of my forthcoming annual fuel subsidy by virtue of a deposit by the government into my current account. Usually they are taking money out by way of taxes! In light of my recent fuel bill hike to £309 per month, that comes as a pleasant thing. My gas bill was until a couple of months ago about £182. That was until my youngest son returned to live with us and also because of fuel price rises in general. I estimate that my son was responsible for half of the increase and my supplier for the other half. My son has just moved away but I am not sure if that is permanent, in the meantime my bill should drop down a tad.
