Second helping
Posted by Shirley Anne on November 15, 2011
I have just watched the second helping of My Transsexual Summer on Channel 4 and like the first episode I was fascinated with what was shown. The group, which had been temporarily reduced from seven to six as one of them was recuperating in hospital after her operation, were typical examples of the average transsexual person. By this I mean they were all different, you see no two transsexuals are the same but they all share similar experiences and aspirations to some extent. Unfortunately most of the group were of a younger age with only one who was older, there being no-one representative of a middle age. There could be a reason for that as many transsexuals don’t come out of the closet until they are older and the younger generation are more open to revealing themselves these days whereas that probably wasn’t an easy option in the past. That was my experience. I could write lots of things about the program, the individuals concerned and the way things were presented but I don’t wish to do so here save to say that the program is worth watching, especially for those who might not know anything about transsexual issues and how they affect people who are transsexual.

I liked your comments in your latest post, what you say is true the younger generation has it better than say us 30-40 year olds, there is better education and laws now here in the uk, i am 39 very close to forty now but it took me till the age of 37 to come out as transsexual.
at first i was nervous but it is the best thing i have ever done as i feel like i have lost 37 years of my life.
i do myself have a few problems ie; i have no family contact and feel very lonely at times, but i know i will get there, what i call my main probs is waiting to see a specialist at charing cross but the n.h.s is slow, and i do get comments and looks as my voice is slightly low(i dont like that),but i know i am better than fools.
so i will say to you girls be yourself and be happy
with many blessings
love

Hello Christina. Thank you for visiting my blog and for commenting too! When I grew up (I was born in 1945) it was unheard of to be transsexual and so it was for me that I too didn’t come out until I was much older. My story is posted here on this blog if you want to read it. I do understand about CX and the NHS in general being a slow process but there is no reason all could not be achieved in a couple of years. Having the cash of course would change all of that but sadly not everyone can afford the expense. I suppose you do work at improving your voice. It is what I did, not that my voice was deep but it sounds much better now after practicing. In some ways you are fortunate in that you don’t have family to worry about but like you say it can get lonely at times. I wish you the best on your journey and hope things work out for you. Do you have an Internet presence, a blog? It would be nice to know a little more about you.
