Time to go shopping

English: Herbert and Paula shopping shoes

Image via Wikipedia

With nothing much to do today my thoughts are beginning to turn to do some shopping no not for groceries, for clothes. I haven’t been shopping for clothes for quite some time and there are one or two things I could do with, mostly tops and underwear but I am always open to buying other things too. Usually, when I go shopping, I already have it in mind what I want to buy and buy those things first but if I see something I like I am often tempted to buy them. My main weakness is shoes but the only shoes I really need just now are those for everyday wear so I will make every effort to buy only those if I do go shopping, besides, I do not want to spend a lot of money at the moment. I do shop using the Internet sometimes but I much prefer to see items of clothing and perhaps try them on before I make a purchase and so I use the high street for that. You cannot feel the material and see if potential purchases are suitable unless you visit a store and it is far quicker too! Although I like to shop for clothes I don’t relish spending a great deal of time doing that. The longer I am roaming about the shops the greater the temptation to buy things when I don’t really need them. Whether I go shopping today will depend on other things but if I decide to leave it for another time it will be during the working week as I do not like shopping at the weekend. Places are so much more crowded at weekends I find and I hate crowds of people.

I could never understand

Once upon a time, sounds like a story coming up but no, not today, today I want to talk about transvestitism. The dictionary description: the practice, especially of men, of wearing clothing usually associated with the opposite sex for psychological gratification.

When I was very young I always wanted to dress as a girl and I never lost that feeling for the rest of my life but as I grew into my teens I realised that what I wanted was not so much to dress as a girl but to be one. Throughout my childhood I desired to be female but knew nothing about it ever being possible. In reality I was already a female but was in the wrong body as the cliché goes. Dressing up for me was a way of fulfilling who I was as far as I could make that possible. Fear and self-denial, circumstances and situations prevented me from taking matters any further. In later life when I eventually became serious about transitioning I discovered many other people in the same boat but I also became aware of people for whom dressing was simply nothing more than a self-gratification and that gender identity wasn’t an issue for them. By far the majority of cross-dressers that I met were male but I did get to meet female cross-dressers too although in their cases they were all gender dysphoric, they were men in women’s bodies as I was a woman in a male body. For the male cross-dressers it seemed to me that dressing up was more of a hobby and as I said, self-gratification, whether that was of a sexual nature or not is irrelevant. I could not understand why anyone should want to do that but it showed a lack of awareness on my part that there are indeed many different people in the world all with differing views, sexual urges, fantasies, persuasions, call it what you will. Even though I now know these things I cannot understand them which brings me to the point where I realise that people who are not transsexual do not always understand that condition either. Ultimately education and time will correct this but I feel there will always be those who will not accept those who are different from themselves. All I can say is that I do accept that people are different for whatever reason even if I do not understand sometimes.

Dedicated follower?

Posted by Shirley Anne on January 30, 2011

It’s been a while since I talked about fashion but it occurred to me that I am far less aware these days of changing styles than I once was. I suppose I take less interest now that I am older. When I was young, like many, if not all my peers, I was what you might call a dedicated follower of fashion. Although I didn’t spend too much on clothes I always followed the latest styles, that was until the days of the hippie! In those days fashion didn’t change much for those who considered themselves part of the hippie culture, most everyone wore denim jeans or hipsters! I do have a style of dress that I prefer which is pretty much traditional, skirts and tops, but the variety is endless. There aren’t any really radical changes to traditional wear, despite what the fashion industry will tell you. Many of my clothes will still be wearable in ten years time because they are traditional in style. When I haven’t worn something for some time I sometimes get asked where I bought the ‘new’ top or skirt which proves that their styles don’t age that quickly. Every so often the fashion houses bring out their latest creations and I enjoy looking at what is available. I like Per Una fashions at Marks and Spencer and can spend quite a lot of time browsing and sometimes buying the clothes on display. Of course they are not the only fashion house displaying but I like much of what they produce. I get excited trying clothes on , finding something I really like and buying it and can’t wait until I get the chance to wear them out somewhere. I have so many skirts now it is difficult to decide what to wear! No, I am not a dedicated follower of fashion but I do like buying new things, things that make me feel good and look good wearing them.

Do I need new shoes?

Posted by Shirley Anne on January 19, 2011

They say that women love shopping, shopping for clothes that is! Who really enjoys the supermarket? It is getting near that time of year when we start thinking about the warmer days ahead. Okay a little far off but you can be sure that the high street shops will be displaying new clothes for the coming season. Shoes too! I love shoes, I have this thing about shoes and I have lots of them but I always want more. Last year, about the same time, I went out and bought some nice clothes for the Spring and Summer, mostly skirts and a few tops. I probably won’t want too many more skirts but that won’t stop me buying some more. I always need tops though so no doubt I’ll be looking for some new ones soon. Now shoes are another matter. I usually buy one or two pairs for the warmer months but I find shoes wear out far more quickly than clothes do! I will probably want a couple of pairs of ‘flatties’ and then some with a small heel (I have plenty of high-heeled shoes that I hardly ever wear). Then there is the colour, something to go with everything is difficult if not impossible so that means buying different coloured shoes too unless I wish to wear black with everything!  Do I need new shoes? You have got to believe it! Yesterday I had no work so I decided on a trip to town to buy some toiletries. I usually do this about two or three times a year. Yes you read that right, I only do my shopping for toiletries that infrequently because I buy in bulk. From bath bubbles to toothpaste, from lipstick to eyeshadow, I buy them all in one go. I go armed with a list but end up buying other things too. I would rather buy essentials this way so that I am in no danger of running short plus I don’t have to keep on popping round to the shops for every item if I were to run short. This leaves me free to do shopping for clothes without the added burden of buying and carrying all those other things too. It is a system I have used for years and it works for me. I was tempted to browse for clothes and shoes but I resisted the temptation. That particular shopping trip is scheduled for another day.

A brand new post!

Posted by Shirley Anne on November 27, 2010

Gosh here I am again with another ‘brand new post’! Yesterday, I always seem to be talking about yesterday; well I cannot talk about something that hasn’t happened now can I? Well actually I can talk about future things but today I am talking about yesterday. Now that is strange don’t you think? It is difficult to talk about today because I am still living it. I digress. Yesterday I had one little job to do in a town ten miles away. I was back home within the hour! I spent the rest of the morning playing guitar and then the guy doing the roof repairs came round to assess the work. Soon afterwards I changed my clothes then E and I went out for lunch. We stayed local, well within eight miles and visited a place we really like going to.  After drinking a full bottle of red wine (me) we finally dragged ourselves out of the restaurant and I asked E if we could browse the local shops because I wanted to buy some clothes. So we parked the car and went round the shops. I bought a lovely top in a pale brown/mushroom colour together with a long knitted cream coloured scarf. E was browsing the coats section of the store we were in and I could see she liked one particular coat there so I bought it for her and we both came away happy. On the way home E took the coastal road which meant we had to pass by my local pub! Guess what? Yes, I asked her to drop me off so I could spend an hour or so there. Being the good girl that I am I stayed there for just two hours and walked home. I met up with a couple of friends there so I was glad that I had called in. It isn’t often that I visit my pub these days but it is nice to go once in a while. Nothing is planned for today, it is my rest day and that is what I am going to do…….rest! Have a nice one!

It’s getting near that time again.

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 9, 2010

It is usually about this time of year that my thoughts turn once again to wearing my nylon stockings and belt. During the warmer months I refrain from wearing them because whilst I am working they would be uncomfortable. Now that Autumn is upon us I can once again feel the nylon on my bare legs. At first I will notice and be aware that I am wearing them but soon they will just become a part of my clothing and I’ll not notice as much. I do like wearing nylon stockings and if and when I retire I will most likely be extending the period during which I will wear them, unless it is very warm! We are experiencing rather warm weather just now so it may be a week or so before I indulge.

PS. I gave in and put them on today! LOL

I did it again!

Posted by Shirley Anne on July 22, 2010

After a late night ‘run’ on my treadmill I had a really good night’s sleep. My intention this morning was to get up early and go into town before it became too crowded. I like to shop when it isn’t too busy. I have never much liked being in a crowd anyhow, preferring the peace and quiet of having just a few people about. Of course I don’t always get that choice. During my working week though it is better to shop before work rather than later when everyone else is doing the same. As it happened I had no work today so shopping early made sense in case I was offered work later. Such are the plans of humankind….I still have no work today and it is now mid-afternoon! I do have one tomorrow though. I digress. My reason for the shopping expedition was to simply buy a couple of lightweight Summer skirts that I could wear to work having worn out two that I had recently. I wanted something in brown and one in green, not plain colours but with those colours in the patterns if you understand. However July is not the time to buy summer wear it seems, many items have already been sold so it makes choosing a little more difficult. I didn’t wish to go roaming around town either so I browsed in only a couple of stores. I did find two lovely floral print skirts which I simply had to buy to add to my collection of simply lovely floral print skirts. They were not however brown or green! Whilst in the store I treated myself to a pair of loafers for work and a pair of wedge-heeled sandals. I also purchased two more ‘Alice Bands’. I came home with £95 less in my account and still I didn’t buy the skirts I wanted. Sounds just like me.

New trends?

Posted by Shirley Anne on March 1, 2010

There seems to be a new trend hitting the streets. I have just been reading an article about people wearing their night-clothes in the street. The strange thing is I saw a girl a few days ago doing exactly that. She was wearing pyjamas and an overcoat. The coat was short so the pyjamas were on full view, white with black polka-dots. She was wearing ankle-boots to complete the outfit. This is nothing new really. Often in the past people have donned a coat to cover their night-wear whilst popping to the local late night opening store for the odd grocery item or cigarettes. However there appears to be a new fashion trend and pyjamas are being worn in broad daylight. There isn’t anything wrong in this of course even it seems a bit silly. After all they are only clothes.

Stockings time

Posted by Shirley Anne on September 3, 2009

This morning I when I awoke I was greeted by high winds and showers. Autumn has started early methinks. So whilst getting dressed for work I decided to don my stockings and suspender belt and then my, shall we say, more warmer clothes, black skirt and cap-sleeved top. Still the plunging neckline though, I need to show my assets…LOL. Unfortunately all this means a different bag too so I had to transfer all my stuff to another bag. However my other bag, that is the one I use for work, is slightly smaller and not everything can fit in it. Oh the agony of being a woman and having to make decisions as to what to keep in my bag. Rest assured though, the essentials will be in there!

Too Hot for Stockings?

Posted by Shirley Anne on June 30, 2009

A lovely thought just passed through my brain……..I want to put on my belt, stockings and high heels. It is too hot for that though and too humid. These are the days when legs should be free to breathe, nevertheless it would be nice to lounge around in sexy legwear don’t you think just for the fun of it? Many would advocate doing that but I will wait for cooler times.
Tonight I am sitting bare legged and bare footed with only the barest of clothes and I am sweating somewhat because of the humidity. We need a good thunderstorm, forecasted but not yet arrived. Tonight is also clean sheet night so I hope I can have a cool night’s sleep and not have to change them again yet.

Another Shopping Spree

Posted by Shirley Anne on May 12, 2009

Well I did it again. My ex and I did some more shopping for clothes yesterday. I think we have enough now although I am still after buying another pair of shoes of a particular size and colour. We had lunch in a pub/restaurant and did some more shopping later. I also got fitted for a bra. Now I always though I’d got that one right but I must admit that some of my bras have not been too comfortable to wear. I discovered that the main problem was the cup size, I was buying smaller cup sizes than I should have been. Thinking that a 38B/C was right when it should have been 36EE makes for an uncomfortable time! Using the standard measuring guides I should be a 38C in size so it proves that system isn’t always reliable. Looks like I’ll be buying some more bras soon. Oh the joys of being a woman.

Spending spree reprise

Posted by Shirley Anne on April 28, 2009

Well I did it again. My ex and I went on another spending spree today and I spent £360 on clothes for each of us. We visited just the one store and it was full of older people milling about. My ex thought we had stumbled into an old people’s home! they were everywhere…LOL. Bless ‘em. There were lots of things I liked, dresses, skirts and such but they didn’t have my size in stock, typical. It must be that my size is popular (14/16) although I can wear 12 sometimes. I don’t know why sizes are not consistent store to store. Anyhow I didn’t specifically go shopping for skirts and dresses. I went to buy some tops and a raincoat, which I did buy. I ended up buying another pair of shoes too. What is it with me and shoes? Tehe….I’ll be opening a shoe shop soon!

Warm Again

Posted by Shirley Anne on April 2, 2009

At long last it’s warm again! I was wondering how much longer it will be before I need to stop wearing my stockings and go bare legged. Much as I love my stockings they can be quite uncomfortably warm as the weather improves, that is during my working day. I have an active occupation and during the warmer days of the year I need to keep as cool as I can when at work. Even out walking in the heat of the day becomes uncomfortable if I am wearing stockings. Now evenings, well that is a different story but only if I have a reason to wear them! I have noticed that there is a lot of interest in ‘Stockings HQ’, a link in my pages, so I know I am not alone in the enjoyment of wearing stockings or being with somebody who does! LOL. Now I wonder if I’ll get any offers? Tehe…..Well I can dream can’t I?
So now I am looking forward to the warm Spring and Summer’s days, with and without my stockings…….

Fashion Lover?

Posted by Shirley Anne on March 27, 2009

Spring is here……..well almost and my thoughts turn toward new clothes again. A month or so back I did a lot of shopping for clothes but you know a girl’s wardrobe is never complete is it? No doubt I’ll be buying more stuff again soon. I was wondering what kind of clothes to buy as I am not a ‘dedicated follower of fashion’. I like wearing skirts and tops mostly but might wear a dress if it is suitable. I could do with some nice Spring and Summer dresses. Whatever I do choose will probably not be enough knowing me! Are any of my readers followers of fashion? What kind of clothes do you like to wear?

An end to ‘Dress down Fridays’…

Posted by Shirley Anne on March 19, 2009

See ‘Stockings and Stuff’ in ‘Girly Stuff’ links (Stockings HQ)……..

An end to “dress down Fridays”
(Edited from contributions to the Stockings HQ discussion forum)

- There was a report on the radio last night, which was followed by a call-in radio show, about a new study that just came out regarding workplace productivity.

It seems that “casual Friday” and “dress down attire” are dismal failures for employers. Studies have now shown that the productivity in the workplace declined by as much as 25% on the days when dress standards were relaxed. To be clear, they compared the same days of the week (pre- and post-policy change) to get accurate statistics.

The study also showed that employees were showing up later for work on the casual days than they were for the standard office business attire days.

Finally, the study also detailed that employees took the “relaxed” standards too far – showing up in t-shirts, sneakers and shorts.

The host of the call-in show was all for a return to “proper attire” (her words) and so were many callers. The host went on to criticise the way her children’s teachers were NOT dressing in a manner that commanded respect and she felt that influenced young minds.

The host lamented the days when woman wore attractive outfits “… including stockings (she knew the distinction! )”. She blamed the blurring of the genders on the all-black outfits worn by females and was critical of the bare leg look in the work place.

Maybe there will soon to be a return to better dress codes in the workplace.

One caller owned a beauty parlour and she does not allow her beauticians to wear sneakers, jeans, etc – they are to dress as women, as their clientele come to the establishment with the goal to leave looking beautiful.

The move is on!

- I must agree, mostly from my own experience, that I feel less productive on those days when I wear jeans and a sweater to work rather than a nice dress and heels.

I finally got sick of looking like a grub all the time, and frankly feeling embarrassed on the subway, with people looking at me like I was some permanent student or someone on the dole. I went back to dressing more appropriately. I feel better, I get more done.

I think it’s a step in the right direction. Will we ever see a return to the old days? Definitely not. No one is going to put up with the rigid and ridiculous dress codes of the ’40s and ’50s. Believe me, when I go home I like to put on comfy clothes to hang out. I am not about to start sorting laundry looking like June Cleaver!

However, there’s nothing wrong with dressing properly when leaving the house and having some self-respect.

- Here’s one for you. Last week I was in the ladies’ hosiery section of a dept store buying for a woman. The sales clerk, friendly enough if seemingly a little embarrassed to be serving me, a man, was dressed in scrubby blue jeans and a top. I couldn’t believe this was a floor clerk in a national dept store chain. And it wasn’t even Friday! And in the hosiery section no less. It made me wonder if she ever wore nylons and knew what she was talking about.

- Amen! I was at Nordstrom’s yesterday and was appalled to see a sales clerk (female) with those hip-hugging black pants and a short top where I could clearly see the small of her back (almost the crack of the moon too) along with one of those tattoos that resembles scroll work. Sadder still was another young sales clerk (also female) who was crouching to check stock in a low drawer and I got a glimpse of the waistband of her pantyhose! GASP!

We were just lamenting this topic (dress down and casual days in the workplace) and I for one, am looking forward to a return to dressing in more ‘business attire’.

First off, it does look better and I feel that people behave in a more professional manner. Also, I usually have my suits (god, I love Italian suits!) tailored, which makes anything look better. And finally, it reminds me as to when I’m packing a few too many calories! Subtle reinforcement!

I welcome the move back. . and if there are more stocking sightings. . so much the better!

- Somehow I feel that this problem goes deeper than a simple dress down policy. My employer does not have a dress down policy at all, yet female dress standards at my firm have declined dramatically in the last few years. For men, things remain very much unchanged, suit, collar and tie, but women seem to be able to get away with wearing just about anything. The reason is obvious – political correctness has left employers terrified to tell female employees what they should wear, lest they be accused of sexism. The result is that many females now feel that they have carte blanche to wear what the hell they want to work. You may not have liked the old days when women were not allowed to wear trousers to work, but in my view it did at least set very clear dress standards, something that is now sadly lacking.

- When I first met my wife in the late ’60s in Brisbane Australia, she would always wear (or carry) gloves as well as hosiery when going to work. Now you must realise that Brisbane is a sub-tropical city and at that time a very conservative one too and the very feminine dress code in the city was most delightful if a little impractical. (Believe me, holding a kid-skin gloved hand is one of my most treasured memories, does anyone else share this feeling?)

At that stage she had just changed over to the new fangled pantyhose which her sister had sent her from London with the advice that pantyhose are hottest item there! At that time she was grateful as the skirts were soaring to great heights, but she still liked stockings.

She has always dressed to the nines when going to work and even when she started a family and became a Mary Kaye cosmetics consultant to keep active for those years, the dress code for conducting her in-home demonstrations always included sheer hose. (That decree I believe, came from the parent company in the US.)

Back in full time work for the past 15 years has seen her get promotions on a regular basis, but nine months ago she started for the first time forgoing sheer hosiery at work and almost immediately noticed that she wasn’t getting the right sort of attention (as in getting the better assignments). She then took up a job in another department, and went back to dressing up and has found that in just a couple of months her prospects of promotion have greatly increased.

However, she went along with a dress down Friday (actually only held on the last Friday of the month), but said never again, because, as she put it, she lost the psychological advantage she had over the others in the department.

I’m all for it!
