Dangerous places

When somebody talks about dangerous places we tend to have pre-conceived ideas of where they are and what they are. There are places of course that are obviously dangerous and even skilled and experienced people get hurt or killed because of them. Swimming in rough seas, mountain climbing, driving, walking on ice, the list is enormous. We can be caught out so easily if we are not careful in life but there is one area that perhaps many people don’t think about as being dangerous. The danger in this case is not one of physical harm but nevertheless can harm us in other ways and it is the vehicle by which this blog post is transported, it is the Internet. The Internet has only been in existence for a short time and it is a wonderful tool that can be used for our benefit but it is also the vehicle that can work to our detriment. Good things earn a reputation for being evil when they are miss used. The Internet is a case in point. It is so easy to get caught out by a fraudster when using the Internet if we are not careful and although many of us are getting wiser to fraudulent activity there are still many who are duped. In fact fraud is probably the biggest and fastest growing criminal activity these days because it has become far easier for the fraudtser to peddle his trade on the Internet. Fraudulent businesses can be set up so easily and so quickly and can just as easily be closed down before the authorities catch up with them. It is harder to catch a digital rougue than a flesh and bone one! The Internet, powerful as it is already, is still in its infancy and it may well be that current problems associated with it may not exist in the future. In the meantime it pays to watch out for danger whether digital or something more solid.

More of it going on

Murder!

Image via Wikipedia

I have always been interested in the news and make every effort to watch reports on television or listen to them on the radio whilst driving. Over the years I have noticed the increased frequency in the reports of violence, especially murder and also of other crimes in general. In years gone by a murder was reported at national level but sometimes crimes of this nature are only reported locally or only given brief attention elsewhere in the country. Murder it seems has become so commonplace that it doesn’t shock us like it once did. This past week alone I have heard reports of three murders. As for lesser crimes most do not even make the news because there are so many of them being carried out. It is symptomatic of today’s society. Values have deteriorated, we as a society have become morally deficient and the result is an increase in the crime rate. Some people would blame that on a decline in work opportunities, too much taxation, insufficient remuneration or the rising cost of living, anything but a diminished personal morality. What is becoming of this country? Why does it seem to be getting worse? One factor could be the increase in drug abuse and the need to fund it. The cost of drugs forces users to a life of crime in order to pay for the habit but of course had they not indulged in the first place no problem would exist. The same goes for people who drink far in excess of what they should, they see a rapid decline in their living standards to pay for the alcohol they consume. It is down to individuals to take proper control of their lives and say no to things that will lead them down the wrong paths in life, maybe to a life of crime.

Who is to blame?

Blame!²

Image via Wikipedia

Regular readers of these pages will know that I have broached this subject in one form or another in the past. Looking at todays society and in particular the decline in moral standards and behaviour makes me wonder how and why things are they way they are. Probably many of us would be unaware of most of the things that go on around us if it were not for the news broadcasts or programs about police activities which have become somewhat popular lately. There are many reasons why our children and youth get into a life of crime and it is easy to blame them for their unruly behaviour and lack of morals. So if it isn’t a simple question of blaming them then who do we blame? Knowing the difference between what is right and what is wrong, what is acceptable and what isn’t is not necessarily why a life of crime is embarked upon however many youths don’t think that their behaviour is wrong. They may feel that it is their right to do as they please and react violently when apprehended. Lessons are sometimes learned but many return to their old ways after receiving and working out their punishment. There is a hard core of persistent re-offenders who it seems never learn from their mistakes. When I see these people being arrested I feel so sorry for them that they should waste their lives in this way. Of course I feel much simpathy for those whose lives have been affected by criminal activity. We have all done wrong things in our lives but it didn’t become a way of life as it is for some. So who is to blame? Is it bad parenting, being in a low-income family, living in underprivileged areas, poor housing conditions, peer pressure or lack of job prospects? Can we place blame on any of these things or is it a more fundamental problem concerning a persons natural inclination to do wrong?

Sick people

Skin Graft Donor site 8 days after the skin wa...

Image via Wikipedia

I was reading a newspaper in the pub a day or so back and there was a picture of a young woman showing her face after months of facial reconstruction surgery, most of it skin grafts. As with most newspapers the main story was to be found on one of the inside pages so I turned to them to read her story. Last year she had broken off her involvement with her then boyfriend but soon after he called to see her and was trying to force his attentions on her. She was having none of it and told him so. A little while later she was out and about in town and crossing a road when someone approached her and threw the contents of a jar he was carrying into her face. It was acid. She ran screaming and traumatized into a local café straight into their kitchen and frantically washed her face in water. It was too late, she had been left horribly disfigured. She had prospects in the modelling world but now all her hopes had been dashed by that one horrendous attack on her person. It appears that her estranged boyfriend had paid someone to carry out the attack. They, I believe are now in gaol. The pictures of the young woman show her face before the attack, after the attack and after surgery. The last photograph looks remarkably like the first and it shows how well her treatment went. I cannot understand why anyone could be so evil as to carry out such an attack on another human being, or any living creature for that matter but it seems that some people just don’t take the time to think or else they simply have no regard for other people. One thing I notice about it all is how little the guy must have loved her to have resorted to such a depraved act.  There are some sick people in the world!

What makes a criminal?

Posted by Shirley Anne on January 27, 2011

I have often wondered why it is that some people turn to crime and others go completely in the opposite direction. Is there an inherent defect in their genetic make-up or is it something that is learnt? Presumably even criminals know the difference between right and wrong or am I wrong in that assumption? There isn’t a day goes by without yet another crime being reported, a murder, a robbery, a burglary, identity theft, fraud, embezzlement or something else. Knowing there are penalties for crime doesn’t prevent the perpetrator in most cases. Those seeking to feed their habit of taking drugs will go to great lengths to obtain the funds to do it and that usually means committing a crime as well as having a motive for doing so. Is there then a motive for all crime or is some of it done on the spur of the moment? It is said that many a crime is opportunistic, without forethought but it takes a person who is inclined to do wrong to carry it out. Some crime is premeditated, either with or without fear of being caught. Would a normally righteous person take to crime if there were no fear in getting caught or would they be tempted if an opportunity arose? As a Christian I believe we are in a constant battle with the forces of evil and have to be on our guard at all times. For those who hold a different view, I wonder what you make of it all? What makes a criminal?

Sick society

Posted by Shirley Anne on January 20, 2011

I was reading the news a day or so ago about a couple of ‘thugs’ who set about a pregnant woman who was in her 33rd week of pregnancy and when they saw that she was pregnant deliberately stamped on the woman’s stomach. They also beat up her boyfriend. They had loitered in a supermarket car park waiting to rob vulnerable people. It happened on the outskirts of Liverpool in a place I know quite well. This sort of thing was a very rare occurence when I was younger, although robbery has been around for as long as we have. It just wasn’t as prevalent. Fortunately the unborn child and the woman survived the ordeal and her boyfriend is alright too. It makes me feel ashamed to be a human being when I see what some people will stoop so low to do. We hear of the aged being beaten to death in their own homes and young people being knifed in the street with some of them dying from their wounds. As I write this the television is on. The program is one of many police activity documentaries showing their dealings with the criminal fraternity. I love watching the police capture the criminal element among us but I sometimes feel they are having an uphill struggle. It seems the moral standards of today leave very much to be desired. From evading road fund licence fees, insurance fees and many other road transport crimes to street muggings, burglary and murder, crime is everywhere and life is cheap to those who only want to satisfy their sick habits and lifestyles. I shudder to think what the country would be like without a police force when it is bad enough with one! One of the failings of the whole criminal justice system in this country are the penalties that are meted out when the perpetrators are caught. Many re-offend as a result. The deterrent is usually insufficient because the punishment doesn’t fit the crime. Are there no decent people living here anymore? We are all guilty in one way or another for allowing things to deteriorate and for not doing enough to stop the rot. Why do people turn to crime? What is the motivation? Well that is a subject for debate and I have my own thoughts about it. What are your’s?

What makes them tick?

Posted by Shirley Anne on September 30, 2009

Today I went to a job some miles away and in a place I infrequently visit. It is a nice estate of houses less than ten years old and all privately owned. The couple in whose house I was working were telling me about the spate of vandalism they have been having. It appears that somebody has been throwing eggs at their house in the wee small hours when normal people are asleep. The guy is an ex-policeman who was forced to retire early because of a sustained injury. It appears that a certain family only a few yards away have recently been in trouble with the law and have taken revenge on their house. Very childish behaviour I must say and totally pointless. No doubt they will cease the anti-social behaviour when they realise this. In the meantime I suggested the couple rig a web-cam to their computer and catch them on record. Either that or wait up and catch them in the act. I wonder what makes some people tick. They seem to feel they have a right to misbehave with impunity. Perhaps an ‘asbo’ should be served upon them.

Caught in the act

Posted by Shirley Anne on April 11, 2009

I regularly watch documentaries on television involving police activity, programs such as ‘Road wars’, ‘Street wars’, ‘Police Interceptors’ and so on. It may seem like boring entertainment to some but I find them very entertaining and like to see the criminals, burglars, robbers getting caught for their anti-social behaviour. Too many people in this world think nothing of living a life of crime at our expense instead of leading an honest one like the majority of us do. I admire the work that the police do, for somebody has to do it.

Too Far…

Posted by Shirley Anne on March 23, 2009

I saw this article on my browser’s front page………….

A post-operative transsexual from Middlefield, Ohio, has been accused of exercising her frail husband to death so she could inherit his retirement benefits, in an attack caught on surveillance video.
Police said Chris Mason forced her husband James, who had heart disease, to do stressful activity in an indoor pool for more than two hours.
He collapsed, and a coroner’s report said he suffered a heart attack and died the next day after Chris Mason authorised his removal from life support.

What can I say?

Constant Battle

Posted by Shirley Anne on January 29, 2009

Have you noticed in your corner of the world how there is such a constant battle against forces of evil? The news is replete with stories of violence, abuse, robberies, muggings, burglaries, hate crime otherwise known as homophobic crime. The list seems to be endless. Knife crime seems to be increasing day by day. People in my town are frightened to go out at night or visit the town itself sometimes.
Yet there are many good things happening too. It appears to me that these days there is a distinct lack of respect for other people in some quarters and an unashamed disregard for the law. Where is it all going to end?
