What makes you laugh?

Sometimes the silliest little thing will have me rolling about with laughter. If I’ve seen something funny or heard something that amused me it can make me laugh about it for quite some time, so much so that I am in pain with my stomach tensed. E thinks I am mad and that’s probably true but I cannot help myself. It is a good thing to laugh, it’s even medicinal! Whether laughing for as long as I do sometimes however may not be quite so healthy but it wouldn’t stop me! I was watching a stand-up comedian on the television a day or so back and I found myself laughing almost all the way through his half-hour show. Those who live in the UK will know him as John Bishop, a middle-aged guy from my home town of Liverpool (well I was born there and lived there for 27 years) and now living in Manchester only came into the business a matter of a couple of years ago. To listen to him you’d think he had been in the business all his life. Some of his jokes are a bit crude though which is disappointing. I can’t see why comedians have to be so crude in order to get a laugh. Granted, the things he says are funny but not necessary sometimes. The things that make me laugh are many fold, almost anything can set me off, a joke, a situation, an error on someone’s part, a visual thing like slapstick or someone like the late Tommy Cooper who only had to stand on stage and say nothing to get you to laugh. Why is it that people laugh anyhow? Some people I know seem to be afraid of laughing, it’s as though they are frightened to let themselves go as it were and that is probably true. I have seen folk trying to stifle their laughter as though they were ashamed of laughing. Have you noticed many women hold a hand over their mouths to hide their laughing smile? I often wondered why women do that. Mind you I have done it myself sometimes! If laughing is supposed to increase one’s life’s span I am going to live a couple of hundred years! LOL. So what makes you laugh? Do you laugh readily or does it take a lot to make you giggle? Are you smiling right now as you think about it? Go on, have a laugh!

Too nice a day

Posted by Shirley Anne on July 27, 2011

Well yesterday I wanted to purchase some materials for the garage so after breakfast and a short session with my computer I asked E if she would like to accompany me, which she did but first I had to wait for her to get dressed! She always has her breakfast before getting dressed whereas I am the opposite, I get dressed first! In the meantime I went out to the garage and measured what I would need in the way of timber on which to fix the metal guides for the roller door. Soon E was back downstairs and ready to go so off we went, first to the timber depot and then on to the electrical supplier to buy a fluorescent light fitting for the garage before returning home. It was still only 11.30 and the weather had changed for the better, bright blue sky and warm sunshine which remained so for the rest of the day. I said to E that it was such a nice day, too nice to be working and would she dine out with me instead. Before we could do anything else I wanted to move out all the plywood sheeting we had stored in the new garage and place it in the old garage instead. E wanted to hang out some washing too but she stopped with me for a short while so that we could move some of the plywood. Most of these sheets are 8′ x 4′ and some thicker than others. There were also some smaller display boards measuring about 5′ square in plywood too, quite a lot to shift when one of us is having difficulty in simply walking about most of the time. I refer to E who unfortunately cannot help me as much as she would like to these days but any help is better than none. We struggled but eventually managed to move most of it before E had to go and hang out the washing. I moved the last few pieces by myself all but one seven-ply 8′ x 4′ sheet which looks almost new and will be just suitable to lay on the floor in the proposed new wet-room before we lay the floor tiles. Although the present floor is very solid it is simply floorboards nailed to joists and unsuitable as it is for the direct laying of floor tiles. That will now save us having to buy plywood for the floor. When we began clearing out the garage we discovered more large logs which we have been giving to our next-door neighbours as they have a wood-burning fire which they use in the colder months of the year. These logs are what remained of our tree-felling activities late last year. Well we found a couple more and they came to collect them. They were admiring our recent work in the garage and asked who had done it all. When we told them that we had done it ourselves they were very impressed, probably thinking we were not capable! So E and I went indoors, got changed and off we went to have our meal, this time at a carvery about eight miles away. Today however I shall be working in the garage doing mostly electrical work which I hope I shall finish completely at some point in the day, unless of course I get a call to do work for someone else! Yesterday was simply too nice a day to waste on working. When we got back home I took my guitar out onto the patio and sat playing some songs for a while in the warm sunshine. You see, I can relax when I’ve a mind too!

All that noise too!

Southport Airshow 2009

Image via Wikipedia

Yesterday afternoon and today in the afternoon we have the annual Southport Air Show when the RAF put on a display centred on the south side of Southport’s pier. Obviously no airplanes land on the beach except for the different helicopters taking part. The aircraft either take off from the small air base which lies south of Southport at Freshfield, Formby (where I used to live a few years ago) or from RAF Valley in Anglesey, North Wales depending on the size of the aircraft. There are other airports too from which they may fly. It is a noisy affair which is unavoidable of course and because we live close to the beach we can hear almost everything. If we wished we could see most of the airial displays from a window at the top of the house as it looks toward the beach. Anything going on at beach level cannot be seen from home and there are several attractions going on there too. We have the same opportunity to see the firework displays which are held each year from a similar place along the beach front without leaving our house. However, neither myself nor E have any real interest in these things having seen them close-to in the past. As far as the air display is concerned we are now of the opinion that the event, albeit entertaining for those who like this sort of thing, is wasteful of fuel. In a time where everyone has to cut down on fuel emissions I think it is irresponsible of those who organise them. It appears there is one rule for them and another for the masses!

One day off and one day not.

Posted by Shirley Anne on June 26, 2011

Yesterday I became a lady of leisure doing no work all day as is my usual behaviour on a Saturday, although occasionally I will work at home on this day. It is important to me to keep the sabbath day as a day unto the Lord always remembering that the sabbath was made for man and not man for the sabbath. I go as far as working at my profession if somebody asks me to do a job in an emergency situation. This fortunately has only happened a couple of times and all other requests are deferred until the following week. So all I did yesterday was watch television, go online or amuse myself on the computer, play my guitar and generally pottered about the house and garden. It wasn’t too warm in the morning but that didn’t stop E from messing about outside and later in the day she dug out all of the potatoes that had been cultivated in our raised cultivation bed between the two greenhouses. For such a relatively small area she recovered a large bucket full of potatoes. They look good enough to eat! LOL. It got much warmer as the day wore on and by evening it was quite warm and sunny, not as warm as the Cote D’AZur but just as sunny. Today promises to be at least warm and perhaps it will turn out sunny too! I hope so because we are entertaining family, friends and neighbours by having a barbecue in our new patio. Today I shall be working by ensuring they all enjoy themselves! One of my friends is presently on the other side of the world nearing the end of her three-month tour of the far east including Australia, Thailand, Singapore and I’m not sure where else. I haven’t heard from her for some time so I hope she is alright. She enjoys herself when she is our guest and we both will miss her presence this time. I am not sure how the day will go but I am determined to enjoy it no matter how it goes.

The weekend or beginning

Posted by Shirley Anne on March 12, 2011

We call it the weekend but if we want to be pedantic it is really both the end of the week and the beginning of the next one.  It all depends on the customs of your country. Sunday is now the traditional day of rest for Christians but the real sabbath day of rest for Christians is the same as that of Israel ( part of which are the Jews of today and in fact much of the western world: see  http://www.ucg.org/booklets/US/josephsbirthright.asp and other literature) and that day is Saturday or rather Friday sunset to Saturday sunset. This means that Saturday would be regarded as the last day of the week, the rest day from the six working days. God didn’t actually rest in the sense that we mean a cessation from tiring work because of tiredness, it means He abstained from carrying out further work or simply ceased doing it because it was all done. I digress. However things were changed by the Emperor Constantine and Sunday became the rest day. No matter. The simple fact is that in many nations of the world there are work days and rest days. The working week in the western world is usually meant to be Monday through Friday with two days off, the weekend.  My personal choice is Saturday as my sabbath rest and Sunday for doing sundry things. This Sunday E and I have invited family (such as are available) and friends for an afternoon of relaxation together with refreshments of food and drink. I hope this will mark the first of many more during the year, hopefully some of them outside in the sunshine!

Yet again

Posted by Shirley Anne on February 13, 2011

I got into bed rather late last night and subsequently arose very late too at around 11am. By the time I eventually got downstairs in was almost 1.45pm! The best part of the time was the soaking in the hot bath. I wasn’t feeling too well or rather I was feeling very tired with aches and pains probably caused by the work I’ve been doing at home recently. Anyhow although I was tired when I went to bed I still couldn’t drift off to sleep straight away so on went the bedroom television. I don’t know why I watch television in bed as I invariably fall asleep half-way through a program or movie. Well last night they were showing The Rocky Horror Show movie featuring Tim Curry and others like Meatloaf for instance. I have seen the film a few times now and was tempted once to go to a live performance on stage but never did. On reflection I think I should have. It is one of those shows which never seem to age and Tim Curry as a mad scientist, who happens to be a transvestite or maybe a transsexual, plays a wonderful role. Sometimes I think he was more convincing than the real thing!

A splendid time was guaranteed for all

Posted by Shirley Anne on November 4, 2010

For the benefit of Mr Kite, there will be a show tonight……..and so it was. E and I have just returned from Liverpool. We journeyed down on the train and we found a nice place to eat, a Spanish tapas restaurant called La Tasca not far from the Royal Court Theatre where we afterward spent the evening watching the John Lennon story. A musical extravaganza following the rise to stardom of The Beatles and Johns solo career after the band split up. The players, all good musicians gave a wonderful performance and portrayed the story extremely well. The songs were simply great. E had won the tickets for the show through one of her competitions so  it cost us far less than it would have otherwise done. For those who are interested and have the opportunity to see the show I would strongly recommend it. It has only a short time left to run so if you wish to see it then make arrangements as soon as you can. You will not be disappointed. Anyhow I must get off to bed now as I am working today, yes it is past midnight! Goodnight!

They didn’t come

Posted by Shirley Anne on November 1, 2010

Last Monday we were expecting some scaffolding to be erected so that access to our leaking roof could be made. E and I had to travel down to Hereford to board a flight on a hot-air balloon. That meant we needed to leave home before noon. The scaffolding firm made that an excuse not to come but they could easily have erected the amount we need to get the roof fixed. So today, this morning I hope, they will do it. I shall be working so I will leave the arrangements to E. She will love having to get up early! I don’t think so. Our youngest son came and stopped over for the weekend. We can always tell that he has visited us, the place is a mess….LOL. He had a party to go to on Saturday evening and he visits friends whenever he is down here. He has a two-hour session indulging in his new hobby, jiu-jitsu and he went to the gym/dojo while he was here. He hasn’t been doing it long but he has just earned his first ‘belt’, a white one. I jokingly told him that he’ll need that to hold his pants up! He seems serious about his training so I think he will progress toward the coveted black belt given time. This Wednesday evening E and I hope to visit a theatre in Liverpool to see the production of the John Lennon story. It promises to be a good show. I have a birthday coming up this month but I’ve no plans regarding that yet, if I bother. Who knows? Well it’s Monday morning and I have work to do………..

I don’t know how she does it!

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 9, 2010

Some time ago E won a prize through one of her competition entries. She does many competitions and is always winning something even large items like a king-sized bed! Anyhow this prize was two theatre tickets for a performance at The Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool. We were supposed to be going there last night but we couldn’t get the seats we wanted, close to the stage because most of the seats had been taken. We had been offered seats high up in the balcony. Seats in the circle would probably have been nice but up there in the balcony is not so good. We decided not to go. Yesterday however E told me that she had won another prize……Two theatre tickets for another performance at The Royal Court Theatre. How much of a coincidence is that? This performance is a story about the life of John Lennon and it looks like it’s going to be a great show. We will be going there early in November. Later this month we hope to finally get that balloon flight after the weather thwarted our last two attempts! More on that later, if it happens!  Now I don’t do competitions but I do the Lotto. Over the last month I have won a small amount at least once every week. When I first started doing the Lotto I won almost every week for eighteen months and then only very occasionally until last month. I have never won anything substantial in all my life but it seems E is better when it comes to winning things.

Incidentally today would have been John Lennon’s 70th birthday.

The best team won!

Posted by Shirley Anne on July 12, 2010

When the World Cup group and elimination rounds began to be televised I thought to myself that Holland, The Netherlands, The Dutch team had a very good chance of winning the trophy. Along the way I saw how the Spanish team played their game and began thinking that they too might be possible winners. There were some strong teams to overcome in the final rounds of course so nothing was set in concrete. I settled down to watch the final game last night and was thoroughly entertained by the football prowess shown by Spain. I was disgusted by the performance of the Dutch team however, not in their capabilities as a footballing team but in their constant fouling. They did not deserve a win and thankfully at the end of the day they were outclassed by a much better team. Congratulations to the Spanish team on their successful achievement!

Finally after all this time

Posted by Shirley Anne on July 11, 2010

Have you ever had something that you needed to go right but it went wrong and you tried everything possible to sort it out? A few years ago now I bought a 350GB external hard drive for my laptop because the one I had, an 80GB one, was too small for the job. I was saving music files and soon found the 80GB drive filled. However when I bought the new drive, which incidentally is a plug-and-play device, like the smaller one, it wouldn’t work. Try as I may Windows would not recognise it’s presence. I returned it to the store and they tested it on their machine and it worked! I returned home and reluctantly stored it away until I had more time to try to sort out the problem with my Windows software. Since then I have had another couple of attempts to solve the problem, all to no avail, until today that is. I am still not sure why Windows wouldn’t recognise the device last time but it does now. I have been able to transfer all the music files from my computer to the larger drive and thus free up the space on my C drive. The smaller 80GB drive still has all the music on it, just! However I am going to free that drive and use it for something else. Now I have the new-found space I can begin recording all my vinyl albums to digital format using the usb turntable through the computer. This will take some time though but at least I can do it all at last. I did a trial run last year when I purchased the usb turntable and recorded one of my albums. I can’t wait to record them all. It will be much easier to listen to any track I fancy without having to search through the vinyls and play each disc through a normal player, although at the moment I have yet to set up the hardware to enable my computer to simply be plugged into the set-up. I listen to the radio fairly often but it will be nice to be able to select what I want to listen to for a change.

Watching the action.

Posted by Shirley Anne on February 7, 2010

I don’t know about you but I like watching sport on television, specifically football (soccer for my US readers) and rugby football. I like watching other sports too but not as much as these two. Yesterday marked the beginning of the Six Nations Cup 2010, member countries are England, Scotland, Irish Republic, Wales, Italy and France. It is a Rugby Union event and is great to watch. Ruby League is slightly different from Rugby Union in that there are differences in amounts of players participating and differences in the game’s rules but essentially the basic game remains the same. I like watching football and as long as the game is dynamic it is enjoyable. Football strategies on the pitch vary considerably and it affects the style of play. Some games are somewhat boring but mostly they are enjoyable to watch. I prefer watching dynamic sports than those which are slow-moving. That’s probably why I hate golf!

What a day!

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 29, 2009

It’s been one of those days again! The morning started with parking restrictions and waiting for my client to turn up on site. In my town’s centre there are severe parking restrictions unless you park at a meter. The problem with my job this morning was that I wasn’t near any meters. The idea was to simply drop off materials and tools etc. go park somewhere and return to do the job. This I finally did but I nearly got booked when I was dropping off materials. The nearest official parking bay for doing that was quite a distance from the job. It’s not as if unloading where I was would be causing a problem as it was a wide street with one way traffic. So I started the job which was a simple one but did it go ok? No way! It was one of the most awkward jobs I’ve done recently. Well I finally finished and went to collect my van which I’d parked a quarter mile away. Talk about time wasting. I went on to my next job 13 miles away. Thank goodness that one went well!
Tonight I am going to the movies. I had thought it was last night but no, it’s tonight. I am using two free access tickets but don’t know yet which film I’ll see. I am dining out beforehand. It has been a very busy week for me and this time of year, that is September through to Christmas, is the busiest time of the year. Usually when I come home in the evenings I am quite tired but I am always up for a night out…LOL

Quizzical.

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 13, 2009

Tonight is Quiz night at the pub. I enjoy going to these events occasionally. They show me just how ignorant I am! I don’t know about you but whenever I partake in a quiz I am amazed at some of the questions posed. It’s a wonder anyone can answer them but some do! All I can say is they must never go out except to the Library. It’s all meant to be just for fun but some people take the whole thing too seriously. Some people will visit several pubs during the week soley to join in a quiz. I think once a week is enough for me and even then I don’t go every week. Do you do Quizzes?

Well we’re off again!

Posted by Shirley Anne on October 5, 2009

…And so starts another week on the treadmill. A bright and sunny Monday morning in October sees the start of my week. I’ve been out already and brushed my driveway clear of pine needles and fallen cones then off to do a small job, fill up my van with deisel and now back home chilling out. I have work scheduled on two days more this week, so far that is! I never know when somebody is going to call so I have to be at the ready. On Thursday evening I have arranged a dinner for six in a restaurant twenty or so miles away to celebrate my ex’s. birthday on Sunday. I am looking forward to that. We had more of us last year and had a great time eating, drinking and dancing the night away but this year we are only doing the meal……..and drinks of course!
