Yesterday has gone

Yesterday (EP)

Image via Wikipedia

At last! Yesterday is all over and done with. Not that I had anything to be done with. I had a day to myself and did almost nothing at all. There were things to attend to promises I’d made to myself but after that I simply drank my wine, had my customary ‘beans on toast’ for lunch, no turkey/chicken/goose, no pudding/mince pies et al, just the simplest of fayre. I don’t feel bloated, I haven’t a hang-over, I’ve not had an argument with anyone, I haven’t actually seen anyone! It has been a lovely Sunday. Am I mad? You might be thinking that but I am not. I am not sure what I will get up to this coming week but I know it won’t be much whatever it is! Probably things won’t pick up for me until mid-January when all gets back to normal. It’s Monday morning and for once I am looking forward in anticipation. Hope you are too!

A national day off

Yesterday was another of the UK’s annual national holidays. Once called a Bank Holiday because banks traditionally closed on a couple of days in the year. Now the holidays are known by another name, this one being the Late Summer holiday although old habits die-hard and the ‘Bank Holiday’ name persists. In a land as small as ours it is easy for our main traffic routes to become clogged with traffic, especially when many people decide to take a trip somewhere over the extended weekend break. Some go abroad and the airlines are usually fully booked weeks ahead but for those who travel within our borders it can be a nightmare, more so when the weather is warm and sunny. We have always rejected the idea of travelling anywhere during these holidays except for local journeys and then we find our roads amazingly light of traffic which is nice. Come the days when the children all return to school the traffic returns to its normal level, packed at peak times and often remaining busy all day especially on the major trunk roads and motorways. It is nice to be able to relax at home, not having anything to do unless you want to. For myself? Complete rest for a change for today I shall be back to work. Autumn is in the air and the days are noticeably cooler, not that this summer was anything like as hot as it can get and the daylight hours are shortening too. Personally I love this time of year, the cooler days of Autumn, the freshness, the lack of annoying flying insects too! One thing I really dislike is eating outdoors in the warmer months because of flying insects with the possible exception of a barbecue where the smoke helps keep them at bay! Come to think of it we haven’t had many of those this year, mostly due to the fact that we have been busy building the patio and the not-so-good weather. National days off are great things for those who find it difficult to get time off during their working life because almost everyone is relaxing in some way. For some though, it is just work as usual.

They forgot?

Posted by Shirley Anne on September 9, 2010

The advertisement I place in my local paper wasn’t there yesterday as it normally is. When I realised the error it was too late to do anything about it so I went to see the newspaper staff about it this morning. I buy six months worth, that is 26 weeks in advance and during the last week I always get a reminder to renew even though I usually remember. I had telephoned them on Tuesday to do just that but they didn’t get back to me. This week is actually the 26th week so I was ready to renew. When I talked to them about the error they claimed that I had no funds in my account even though I had already paid the six months ago in advance! I took along the last couple of years invoices which I keep in a ring-binder to prove that it was indeed the 26th week and the advert should have been placed in the paper. In essence it means that I have no advert and probably no work now for the next week unless I get calls from my established clientele.  I have arranged and paid for the next 26 weeks which will run from next Wednesday (the day the paper is published). In the meantime they will investigate the error regarding that ‘lost’week and will reimburse me if they discover it was their fault. As a goodwill gesture they will increase the size of my advert for the first four weeks. I might get more work as a result of that but I rather doubt it! I returned home and an hour later received a call from their office explaining that in January next year VAT (for non nationals, value added tax) will be increasing and I will have to pay that extra amount for the weeks that fall in the new year. I give up! LOL
So it looks as though I have a weeks enforced holiday.

All over now?

Posted by Shirley Anne on December 23, 2009

As I write this it is 11.20 on a wonderfully sunny morning. I have been out and completed my final job before Christmas………..or have I? I am not expecting a phone call but you never know do you? Once I got called on Christmas Day. I did respond and re-instated the power supply so that the turkey could be roasted. No, I didn’t charge for doing it. So now I can sit on my butt for a few days. Maybe.
