E went shopping this afternoon so soon after she had gone and I had finished on the computer I decided to go into the kitchen and prepare something for our evening meal. A neighbour had guys cleaning out her land drains so there was some noise with the machinery. It’s odd I find, that you get used to noises after a while, as long as they aren’t too loud. The house was otherwise very quiet. I’d been in the kitchen some fifteen minutes and I realised that there was no longer a sound coming from outside. Now it was deathly quiet and it was noticeable. Being an old house, built in 1877, it has creaking floorboards but like any house there is always some movement due to temperature changes and such. I began hearing noises which I couldn’t ascribe to any of the usual little noises common in houses. This isn’t the first time I’ve heard such noises when alone in the house. They sound like someone walking about in an upstairs room. Once I was so convinced there was someone else in the house I went about looking but soon realised I was alone, or maybe not? If I tell anyone about them they think I am making it all up or that I am just imagining things. Apart from the occasional noises I have seen shadows from the corner of my eyes when looking elsewhere and in rooms where there are no reflections from passing traffic. Something caught my eye once and I glanced toward where I thought I’d seen something but found nothing there. I felt certain I had seen a shadow moving on the stair. Maybe it is all in my imagination but I have an open mind. Perhaps the old house has more to tell than I once thought?

So what about you? Do you believe in ghosts? Have you seen an apparition of any description that would incline you to think what it might have been? There are many stories about encounters with ghosts, spirits even angels and possibly many of them based in fact. Countless pictures and photographs exist of ‘ghosts’ but of course a photograph can be ‘doctored’. It would be difficult to make a decision one way or another just by viewing a picture. I think a personal encounter is the only way we can prove to ourselves one way or another whether ghosts really do exist. I have reservations but I do believe in spirits both angelic and demonic. Whether a ghost is the same as a spirit I could not say. Usually ghosts are reported as an apparition of somebody who once lived, maybe their ‘spirit’ but that would mean that they were neither in heaven nor in hell, if you believe in such things. I do. That would also mean that their spirits would remain forever roaming about. Why would that be the case? Why then should they become partially visible to us? There are many things we do not understand and perhaps never will. Once as a very young child, I was awakened in the night by something and gazed toward the foot of my bed and saw my brother standing there. He was actually lying next to me as we shared a bed in those days! I never did get to understand that experience. Perhaps it was a ghost, perhaps it was just my imagination but I know what I saw.
