It’s funny how life works out sometimes. Once, long ago, I dreamed of living in some hot climate but obviously not in the UK. Admittedly it can get quite hot even here but it doesn’t last for months on end, more like weeks if we are fortunate. All interest in moving away from where I am now left me years ago. I think many people romanticize about living in warmer climes but not everyone actually uproots and moves away. In my case I had thought of moving to Australia just after my ex and I were married. We spoke about it and made tentative enquiries but decided against the idea not long afterward. Basically it was down to family ties and being able to see family members more easily. We just couldn’t tear ourselves away but had we thought about moving to Spain for instance I cannot be certain the same reason would have prevented the move. E and I are too deeply rooted to the area in which we grew up and have lived all our lives. I think most people feel this way and have no real desire to move away except for short periods such as holidays. Even the thought of moving to another county can be something of a pipe-dream. Fairly recently a friend of mine up-sticks as they say and moved to another county in the south-east of the country but that move was driven by personal circumstances and a need to be located nearer to London for person reasons at least for the short-term. Probably the move will be permanent for I see no reason she should think of returning. She will be able to plant roots and become an established member of the local community. I suppose we could all do the same thing if the wish was there. Sometimes we can be tied to a place for so long and then not be in a position to move even if we wanted to. At this moment in my life I have no such desire to move away from my present location. It is a question of being contented and happy living where we do but when we are not and there is a specific need to move away many find they have no other choice but to move. Breaking the ties to a place can be difficult for some but others have no difficulty whatsoever. To be truthful I think we can all grow to like a new place and be quite happy moving elsewhere but I don’t think we ever forget our roots.

Our granddaughter Isabella was born on New Years Eve and E and I got to see her the next day but we hadn’t the chance of seeing her since then due our circumstances and those of our son and daughter-in-law. Sunday, around noon, they came round to see us. We were supposed to be dining with them on Friday last but Isabella had a chest infection and was taken to see the doctor. It appears she had a cold. She has changed quite a lot over the weeks since her birth and is just beginning to take notice of her surroundings. I couldn’t wait to have her in my arms once more so I was very happy that I could do that knowing that she could see me for the first time. The last time I held her in my arms her eyes were closed. She is beginning to stay awake more often now. During the short stay with us Isabella had her nappy (diaper) changed twice by her dad and I looked on remembering that once he was having his nappy changed by me! I am so looking forward to seeing Isabella more often as she grows and becomes even more aware of things. It will be fun getting to know each other little by little as the months go by. Whilst she was here on Sunday I took her to the window overlooking the back garden and she seemed as fascinated with the view as she was with the bookcases in the same room. Sadly she had to leave with her mom and dad but I know she will be back soon. She’s a little darling. When my son sends me the photos he’s taken I’ll be able to post one or two on here. I suppose I could have taken one or two myself but I simply didn’t think of doing that for some reason.

After the debacle on Monday we are still no closer to having our roller door fitted. The ball, as they say, is in the other persons court but I am optimistic it will get done soon. So most of Monday was spent elsewhere for me doing jobs away from home. I lay awake for the third time on Tuesday but finally got out of bed and downstairs by 09.30. By ten o’clock I was busy getting ou the ladder and tools ready to install the extract fans grill for the new wet room. Ordinarily this would be a straight-forward task but its position on the wall made access difficult being too close to the window for positioning the ladder and too far to be able to work from on top of the garage roof. The ladder was the safest option but even then it had to be securely tied because of the angle being a little steeper than it would normally be. This was due to the fact that it was in a narrow passageway. I used my little grinder to cut the brick and mortar but even so it was hard going. The bricks are called ‘Stock bricks’ made in the latter part of the 19th century (the house was built in 1877) and are very hard indeed. Then I had to drill the bricks for the fixing holes and almost wore out the new drill bit as the bricks were so hard. The otherwise simple job took me two hours if we take the time for setting up and clearing away into account but at least it got done. I went indoors and channeled out the plaster ready for installing the electrical wiring. So I am on track now and hopefully much more progress will be made now. E and I were thinking of a trip into Liverpool one day this week but our eldest son asked if we might like to dine out with he and his wife and their little daughter on Friday. We have accepted of course and Liverpool will have to wait until another day. As I write this on Tuesday evening I have no work scheduled and if I don’t get any I shall carry on working at home. I’ll have to see what happens. It looks like we are in for some fine weather which would be a handy thing if I could do some work in the garden. I still have to dig out the roots and balls of those trees and shrubs but at the moment it seems unlikely that I’ll get the chance.

On Monday we were expecting to have our roller-shutter door fitted in the garage but nobody showed up during the morning. I telephoned the firm to enquire why hadn’t anyone turned up. I was told by the guy I’d given the job to when he came a few weeks ago to replace the draw wires on the door of the other garage, that he hadn’t been able to attend due to an injury he’d sustained but that he had passed the work to a sub-contractor. He apologised and told me he would look into the matter and call me later. In the meantime I received a call to do some work about a mile or so away and I went to do that. I then received another call an hour or so later to another job and on my way back home from that one I received the third call to do yet another job. E had remained at home in case the workmen arrived whilst I was out. During the last job I got the promised call and was told that he couldn’t get in contact with his sub-contractor so he had given up on them. He promised to call me in the evening with details of a new installation date but at the time of writing, and it is now eight o’clock, I still haven’t received that call. I am wondering if this door is ever going to be fitted! I don’t know how some people remain in business when they treat their customers this way. It is something I would never do and never have done throughout my working life, there really is no excuse for it. The only redeeming thing is that I managed to earn enough money on the day to pay for the job when and if it finally gets done. I did have the money in any case. Whilst at my third job I phoned E to let her know that no-one was going to come and that she could go out as she had wanted to do. During my excursions I managed to buy in some more materials for my work at home too.

Last Monday found me at home with no electrical work scheduled. It was a cold and frosty day as was Tuesday but I looked at the garden and decided I would do some work out there. Last year we did a lot of work in the garden, preparing and laying paths after digging up huge amounts of roots for the path that was to lead to the new greenhouse. I installed electrical supplies for the greenhouse area and later in the year another electrical supply for the new patio at the opposite end of the garden. Alongside that patio was an area of border which was heavily overgrown with trees and shrubs which we wanted to remove to pave the way for a flowerbed. To the right of this flowerbed and positioned in the corner of the garden was a raised area dotted with heavy stones originally set there by the previous owner of the house as a rockery but by now had become heavily overgrown too and filled with ivy from a neighbour’s garden. We wanted to clear the whole area last year but we had too many other projects on the go so we deferred working on it until this year. Well this year has started and on Monday I made a start at clearing all of the trees and undergrowth. It wasn’t an easy task as all the plants were intertwined. E joined me after a short while and we managed to cut down and remove much of the trees but we left some of it until Tuesday when I made an early start and removed the rest. It is Tuesday as I write this and there is still much more to do, not least of all digging out the roots which is going to take quite some time over the next couple of weeks. First of all we have to remove all of the stones to leave the soil clear to dig and hopefully then the tree roots and stumps.
Compare these three photographs taken over the last two years. The first one shows the trees and shrubs before any work had been started on the patio. The second shows the corner of the garden to the right of the first photo in which I am currently working and was taken almost two years ago when we had all that scaffolding erected whilst work was going on replacing windows and such. The third photo shows the same area taken early last year and it shows the previously cleared flowerbed adjacent to the yet to be built patio just out of view to the left as well as the remaining trees and shrubs behind the plum tress in the raised area. With a bit of hard work we hope to complete work in the area within the next few weeks but that will depend on other things not least of all the weather. Work in the garden will keep us occupied for some time but I mustn’t forget the plans I have elsewhere in the house (the wet room) and the garage too.

I haven’t really had much chance to see what is going on in the garden lately except at the weekend because my jury service commitment has kept me from home during the daylight hours. I remember looking around the rear garden on Sunday and seeing flowering plants in the border we created last Summer when we were working on the patio. It is pretty much sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds because of the garden wall which would help to keep them flowering for longer but it is January and not exactly the month to see flowering plants unless they are snowdrops. Daffodils it appears are sprouting up all over the country and there are some even as far north as Aberdeen according to one viewer on a television magazine program a day or so ago. It would seem that Spring has come early this year. Although it is still Winter we haven’t really had much wintry weather compared to what we are accustomed to. It is too early to say that we won’t get colder spells with snow and ice before the season is over or that it is too late in the season for it to happen but if we judge by what the plants are doing it appears unlikely. It it a good thing? Perhaps not. The reason I say that is the plants will be struggling to cope with the changes but more than that there is nothing to stop garden pests from flourishing in the mild weather. When the weather becomes cold it has the effect of curbing the growth or even killing off diseases and general garden pests that threaten a plant‘s developement, especially those we cultivate for food. The garden nevertheless looks fine and the grass is lush and flourishing too but no doubt so will the moss, clover and weeds! Our lawn isn’t that good! There will be plenty to do out in the garden soon enough not least of all replacing those plastic panels that the recent high winds blew out of the small greenhouse. Thankfully the large greenhouse has been unaffected but then it is a more professional affair with glass panels. I will be replacing the damaged plastic panels in the small greenhouse with glass in a few weeks time. There is much to do elsewhere before then.

Well it is Tuesday morning and I am off to Liverpool today, to the Queen Elizabeth 11 Crown Court to do another stint at jury service. I have no idea if my services will be required or not, nobody does until the day itself but it would be a shame to have to take time out if I am not subsequently elected. There is a possibility that I won’t make it as a juror but I’ll have to wait and see. It was Christmas Eve when I last did some electrical work and it might be a further two weeks before I get the chance to work again but if jobs are scarce I do have work to start on at home. Late last summer E and I purchased materials and fittings for converting our downstairs toilet/cloakroom into a wet room containing a shower, toilet and wash basin but we never got round to starting the job. Presently the room is stripped of wall and floor coverings but still has a working toilet and wash basin which must be removed before we can begin the installation. Happy days again. Work at home never seems to end. We plan to completely renovate the second largest bedroom on the first floor at some point. At the moment the room is full of odds and ends which need to be thrown out or stored in the cellar, the carpet requires changing and no doubt I will need to add a couple of extra power outlets too. Then there is the furniture to buy, bed, wardrobes and such. To be fair the room hasn’t had a proper make-over for years and it really needs it. There is no special reason for doing it up but it will allow its use as a guest room. There are two spare bedrooms on the top floor (the third bedroom is being used for storage and as an office) but they are only fitted out with the bare essentials so it would be nice to have a larger and better appointed room as one of the four main bedrooms situated on the floor below. This will mean that we have six of the seven bedrooms available for use, although E and I are using two of them. For the moment I am focused on my trips to Liverpool and all of this can wait. When it gets a little warmer I really must push to get the garage finished too but the main thing there is getting that roller door installed! No, it hasn’t been fitted yet but all that is needed is to get it raised to ceiling height and onto the brackets I fitted a few months ago, the rest should be easy. It is hard getting things done when there is no-one available to help.

At last! Yesterday is all over and done with. Not that I had anything to be done with. I had a day to myself and did almost nothing at all. There were things to attend to promises I’d made to myself but after that I simply drank my wine, had my customary ‘beans on toast’ for lunch, no turkey/chicken/goose, no pudding/mince pies et al, just the simplest of fayre. I don’t feel bloated, I haven’t a hang-over, I’ve not had an argument with anyone, I haven’t actually seen anyone! It has been a lovely Sunday. Am I mad? You might be thinking that but I am not. I am not sure what I will get up to this coming week but I know it won’t be much whatever it is! Probably things won’t pick up for me until mid-January when all gets back to normal. It’s Monday morning and for once I am looking forward in anticipation. Hope you are too!

Regular readers of these pages will know that I have broached this subject in one form or another in the past. Looking at todays society and in particular the decline in moral standards and behaviour makes me wonder how and why things are they way they are. Probably many of us would be unaware of most of the things that go on around us if it were not for the news broadcasts or programs about police activities which have become somewhat popular lately. There are many reasons why our children and youth get into a life of crime and it is easy to blame them for their unruly behaviour and lack of morals. So if it isn’t a simple question of blaming them then who do we blame? Knowing the difference between what is right and what is wrong, what is acceptable and what isn’t is not necessarily why a life of crime is embarked upon however many youths don’t think that their behaviour is wrong. They may feel that it is their right to do as they please and react violently when apprehended. Lessons are sometimes learned but many return to their old ways after receiving and working out their punishment. There is a hard core of persistent re-offenders who it seems never learn from their mistakes. When I see these people being arrested I feel so sorry for them that they should waste their lives in this way. Of course I feel much simpathy for those whose lives have been affected by criminal activity. We have all done wrong things in our lives but it didn’t become a way of life as it is for some. So who is to blame? Is it bad parenting, being in a low-income family, living in underprivileged areas, poor housing conditions, peer pressure or lack of job prospects? Can we place blame on any of these things or is it a more fundamental problem concerning a persons natural inclination to do wrong?

Well the weeks work is over and I have no plans for the weekend. I’ll probably visit the pub at some point. I think there will be things to do at home though, like checking the central heating which needs attention, venting off air from the radiators, setting the controls and adjusting thermostats and such. The garden is looking good but there is some tidying up to do, leaves and broken twigs lying about need clearing away. At this time of year most of the work in the garden is simply tidying and bringing in any crops that are still growing. I removed the remainder of the apples from the trees before they began to drop off by themselves rendering them bruised if they fell on a the hard surface below. Both trees are planted between a path and the concrete standing where the greenhouses are. The path was placed there earlier in the year where there was only grass so we have to watch for apples that fall before we can pick them. Come to think of it, I don’t need to plan anything do I?

As those who have been reading my many posts over the last twelve months will know, E takes care of what is grown in the greenhouses we have. I take a passing interest. I am not a gardener by any means and really only help out with the more heavy work of mowing the lawn, chopping up branches and clearing out debris. I like gardens but don’t much fancy working in them! E’s pride and joy is to see the fruits of her labour and being able to stock our refrigerator with tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers from what is produced in the greenhouses. I have been eating tomatoes so much I fear they will be coming out of my ears soon and there are still plenty more of the to eat yet. A week or so ago I came across this specimen
Alongside is a more normal specimen, like the rest of them. Now I have seen many odd things in my lifetime but never a tomato that has a nose! It tasted good though – nose and all! The crop has been incredible and it is difficult to keep them fresh for any length of time although the fridge keeps them so for quite some time. Those that cannot be eaten raw because of the time element have to be fried or used in cooked dishes like chilli-con-carne or Bolognese but get eaten they do. This year we had so much cucumber that E had to give some away. One or two specimens grew to about three feet or about a metre in length and as you know cucumbers don’t stay fresh too long once cut into and really can only be eaten in a salad. I think that next year we will have to grow fewer cucumbers for that reason unless we can give them away. In fact as I write this there are still tomatoes and cucmbers growing in the greenhouse! There has been success in growing beetroot and carrots too. A couple of onions have done well but as this was really the first season for E to experiment with growing vegetables she has done remarkably well. The greatest success outdoors has been the potato crops but they are quite easy to grow. I am wondering what sort of crop we will get next time. The apple trees have produced quite a crop too and there are still apples on the branches. E has made several jars of apple sauce for use when having pork and there is some left for making pies. The rhubarb has supplied me with a few rhubarb crumbles and continues to grow as it is picked but the weather will soon put an end to that until next Spring. Altogether we have done quite well growing our own produce and we hope it will be even better next year.

When I was at the doctor’s surgery last week there was a guy in the car park carrying out a valet on a vehicle owned by one of the staff. He was doing it when I arrived and was still doing it half an hour later. I chatted with him and found out that he had suffered a couple of heart attacks and now cleans vehicles instead of his previous job which I didn’t get a chance to ask about. He was starting afresh in life, having a clean sweep as it were. I asked him what he would charge me for cleaning the cab of my van, which is like having half the interior of a large saloon car cleaned. The outside doesn’t need cleaning and in any case I do that myself in about twenty minutes and the carriage area, that is were all my electrical stuff is stored gets a clean out once a year by myself. He told me he would charge £20 which includes shampooing the carpets and seats. He is coming this morning (Tuesday) to do the job.
Every so often I have a clean-out of my bedroom and in other rooms of the house (although to a lesser extent). I think it is a good idea to have a good clean-out every so often. It is quite amazing what rubbish I find I have accumulated after a short time. My office, that is the room I use for an office, gets cleaned of out-of-date paperwork, invoices etc. although I have to keep the last five years worth of documents for tax purposes. It still leaves a lot of paper to store away. Cardboard boxes keep it under control. When I look back at my life it has always been one in which I have regularly had a clean sweep because it has always been necessary!

Some people say that I have some strange eating and drinking tastes. According to them my habits are a bit weird but it’s all down to personal taste. I stumble across things by experimenting. Many years ago now a friend and I were drinking at a bar. I was drinking cider and she diet or normal cola, I can’t remember which. Not watching what she was doing she poured the cola into my drink but rather than throw it away I tasted it and liked it so much I ordered a cola and cider and mixed them 50% equal measures. Later I discovered that the cola would actually sit on top of the cider if poured slowly. The resulting effect is startling and when drunk it starts off tasting sweet and gradually the cider can be tasted until almost all of it is just cider. A bit of a novelty which I still enjoy today, if the bar staff have the time to pour the cola slowly but now I only add diet cola. That original discovery led to two more concoctions, diet cola with Red Bull and cider with Red Bull all in the same proportions as before and all with their own distinctive taste. Now here is a really odd thing. Many people drink ‘spritzers’ which is white wine mixed with soda water or lemonade but there isn’t, or wasn’t a similar drink using red wine. One day a couple of years ago I had a diet cola as an initial drink at the dining table but ordered red wine to accompany my main dish. When the main dish had been eaten and I had almost drunk what was left of the red wine I took a sip of cola. Because I still had the taste of red wine on my palette it mixed with the cola and a new drink was born! I poured a small amount of cola in the remains of the red wine in the glass and tasted it. I was amazed that it tasted so good. Nowadays, when I dine out, or as I did on Monday evening in the pub, I buy both cola and red wine and when I am tired of drinking the wine by itself I mix the two together. People think I am mad but it is all a matter of taste.
As for food, I tend to experiment at home with what I have in the refrigerator or larder. I try different things to see if they go well together before including them in a dish together, just as I would with drinks. Many things can be put in an omelette and I often have more than one of these, peas, sweetcorn, mushrooms, onion, tomato, potato, almost anything that tastes well with eggs. Then I lay the omelette on a bed of cold lettuce and it tastes delicious. I mix fried chopped onions with baked beans, put black pepper and herbs in with cabbage when cooking it (the water is a nice savoury drink). Stews can have lots of strange things in them when I cook them here’s one I cooked a few days ago containing, fried onion, garlic, capsicum, minced beef (could be any meat), water, peas, sweetcorn, carrots, mixed herbs, beef stock cube, vegetable stock cube, paprika, ground black pepper, salt, sage and onion stuffing mix, gravy browning, sunflower oil (cooking the onion and meat). A dash of malt vinegar was put on the dish when served in a bowl. It all sounds a bit too much but the taste is worth the effort and it really isn’t an effort, taking only twenty minutes from start to finish. I get bored eating the same old dishes all the time and that is why I experiment. Variety is the spice of life they say.

I have been into many homes, it’s part of what I do as an electrician. The actual number must run into thousands. I have been in real hovels where the occupier has had little respect for themselves let alone their house. I have been in houses where the owners have done their best to make their home clean and tidy with as much investment in it as their income would allow, you might say house-proud. I have been in houses that look like show pieces where everything is neatly stacked away with nothing out-of-place and where every move I made was closely followed by a brush and shovel. There have been homes that I would never dream of living in and those that were most inviting. My own house is fairly well-appointed, fairly well decorated and fairly clean but most of all it is a home, a lived-in house and not one that I am terrified of anyone daring to put a cushion out of place in. It’s all about attitude to life I suppose. Some folk take things far too seriously and I think often afraid of actually living out their lives without imposing all the rules they have in place for those living in their homes. Take a close look at your own home and see if it is inviting to any visitors. Do you make too much fuss when visitors call or can they find a more relaxed environment when they visit your place?

Over the last few months I have made myself a chilli-con-carne almost once every week. Now I do like chilli but after this weeks serving I am finding that the novelty is wearing off, so much so that I don’t think I’ll be making it for a while. Also I think once every week is too frequent so if and when I resume making it I shall only make it occasionally. It isn’t just chilli either, I find I am getting bored eating many of the meals I prepare. It could be that my tastes are changing or it could be that I am simply tired of eating from the same menu week after week. Last week I made myself a spaghetti Bolognese for the first time in a couple of years and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have resisted the urge to make another one too soon. I love fish but don’t cook it often enough at home. It is sometimes my choice when dining out though but still I don’t eat it too often. I like to vary my diet as much as I can but find myself just eating whatever is available. I like to concoct dishes where possible and end up finding unlikely combinations on my plate. For example as a snack I like chopped fried onion mixed into baked beans (it is tasty, try it), boiled rice mixed in with peas and sweetcorn, omelette filled with the same and served on a bed of lettuce – less the rice of course (maybe I’ll give that a try), anything is possible if my taste buds allow. It does no harm to try things but usually I serve separately before mixing them in the cooking process so that I have the choice of mixing them or not. It is surprising what unlikely dishes I come up with sometimes and it puts a bit of fun into the process. I do get bored with food though so I like to have a non repetetive and varied diet where possible. This is one reason I like to dine out, there is often quite a varied menu on offer. Another reason is I don’t have to wash up afterwards!
My drinking habits often follow along the same lines inasmuch as I like to vary what I drink and I like experimenting with drinks to find something that I like. For instance I like cider with cola (50/50), cider with red bull (50/50), cola with red bull (50/50), red wine with cola (50/50) and many more. I never mix spirits with other spirits, not that I drink much of them anyway and never mix wines with other wines. I get bored drinking the same old drinks each time I go out so you will find me often selecting the unusual. Whatever I choose to drink on any particular occasion I will stick with it save for any soft drinks that I may have at the time.
Perhaps it is just me but I hate sticking to the same thing, whether it be food or drink or anything else for that matter. What about you? Do you like to experiment?
