Ape Man

I was talking to the guy behind the counter at my electrical wholesaler’s today, a nice guy and always seems to have a smile on his face. I don’t know how the conversation switched to evolution (I don’t believe in evolution of the species but only evolution within a species) but he said, ‘If we descended from the apes, why are there still apes’? Why wouldn’t all apes evolve into something else? A good question indeed, ‘Why are there still apes’? I think each species does evolve within itself as I said. We do and have done in the past. Nevertheless I think we have always been human and apes have always been apes.

  1. Well, I can give you the anthropological explanation of how a species gives rise to others through natural selection and speciation, if you’re interested in hearing about it. All I will say for now is that giving rise to another species doesn’t obliterate the parent species and that the theory of evolution claims that we descended from a common ancestor that we share with today’s apes (orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos), not that we desceneded from these latter apes. I’ll stop there because these processes are complex to explain and I’m not sure if you even want to hear it. Also, I’m not really that much into debating it. I think that the theory of evolution explains our physical origins and that other belief systems explain the origin of spirit. I don’t think they have to be exclusive.

  2. Well actually Jacky I do know the anthropological explanation of how, in theory, natural selection takes place to possibly give rise to new species forming but I don’t believe it and yes, I don’t wish to go into a debate over it. The theoretical processes are not foreign to me at all. Saying that ‘other belief systems explain the origin of spirit’ doesn’t actually explain the origin of spirit now does it? You would either have to believe in the spirit originating through the physical or believe it is given in some supernatural way. If you believe the former then we would all have the same spirit within us seeing as all flesh (Human) is basically the same. However we are not all of the same spirit are we? I mean by that we are all different spiritual beings.
    We could hold a debate on this for a very long time but essentially that is futile. We will get to know the truth (if we don’t already do so) one day. Thanks for your input. Love

  3. Hi Shirley Anne;

    Fair enough if you already know about how natural selection and speciation work. I only offered because I know that a lot of people who haven’t specifically studied it don’t know and, like anything else, there are a lot of misconceptions propagated in the media. So when I can help clarify things, I do it.

    As for my ideas about spirit . . . that is my opinion and also not up for debate. It wasn’t an attack on whatever it is that you choose to believe, it was merely a statement about what I choose to believe. There is no way to prove where our spirits come from. It can be interesting to talk about though and I’m more than willing to share my belief system and my ideas about spirit if I know that I’m safe from people trying to tell me that they are wrong. But incidentally, my ideas about the origin of spirit don’t entail what you claim that they entail. At all.

    Alas, I’m not in the mood to debate my ideas about spirit any more than I am in the mood to argue about the process of speciation, or anything about science and religion.

    Have a good one;

  4. Disclaimer: Lest you think that I was implying that I assumed that you *didn’t* know about the theory of evolution, natural selection and speciation, I wasn’t. I was inquiring, because I have no idea what you’ve read and, in my own experience, a lot of non-anthros just haven’t been exposed to that information and haven’t sought it out for whatever reason. There was no insult intended there.

    Just covering my ass here. šŸ˜‰

  5. I love ya you big dummy! No offence taken at all Jacky. It is fine talking about these subjects but often ‘little’ chats can turn into great debates, even arguments as you well know. I’d rather we simply say what we believe and leave it at that. Just like we have done eh? Take care sweetheart. Love
