Some people want it all but are not willing to reach out for it. Others do reach out and are happy for a while then all returns to how it was before. Yet others don’t think there is anything to reach out for and miss out as a result. When the Israelites were being treated harshly and were oppressed by the Egyptians God moved in their favour. Moses became their leader and led them out of Egypt to the land promised them by God. However in their disobedience they ended up wandering about for forty years. God laid down a promise:-
The offer of life or death (Deuteronomy 30)

11 Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. 12 It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, ‘Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so that we may obey it?’ 13 Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, ‘Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so that we may obey it?’ 14 No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so that you may obey it.

15 See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. 16 For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.

17 But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, 18 I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.

19 This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live 20 and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

This was a material promise, something very tangible but it has a spiritual significance too and relates to the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ in heaven. According to many there is no such place and no such person as Jesus Christ. They are the ones who refuse to reach out to see. There are many who do reach out and for a while believe but something earthly happens to them and they forget the One who can save them. Then there are many who want a life after death but are not willing to place their trust in the One who can provide it. How many people think they are going to heaven yet haven’t a clue what is required of them? God gives us a promise but it is conditional. We are none of us good enough to receive anything in fact, it is only by God’s grace and mercy and our own faith to believe and trust in that promised gift that we can receive. God shows us the way and the way is through Jesus Christ. It is then up to us to reach out.
