It is finished

The death of Jesus

28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, ‘I am thirsty.’ 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. (John 19)

The Blood of Jesus

In the Old Testament we read about the people whom God had chosen out of all the nations of the Earth to demonstrate to all the wonders of His love, His compassion and the promise of life for those who would listen and obey. He laid down laws by which they could live and lead their lives but they couldn’t even follow those laws and repeatedly disobeyed. When they realised their error they were allowed to repent and be forgiven by offering sacrifices of blood. Their livestock was killed and their blood shed in place of themselves. God knew that people would not obey and would go off and do their own thing but He had a greater plan in mind. Had we all been obedient there would not have been the necessity for sacrifice. We became unable to turn away from the things which go against God and against Law. It is still evident today because we can see how wicked the world has become through sin and sinful behaviour. God knows that we are helpless to save ourselves from it all so He provided the ultimate sacrifice by the shedding of Jesus’ blood instead. There is now no need to bring sacrificial lambs, goats and other animals as a token of our repentance for we now have a Saviour who took the punishment that we deserve for our sins and sinful ways upon himself. All we have to do is believe in our hearts and confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and repenting of our sins accepting his invitation to be our Lord and Saviour. He completed the work of obtaining salvation for us all if we turn to him recognising that there is no other way and no other name under heaven by which we must be saved. He accomplished it all on a cross in agony and pain as he carried all of our sins upon himself. His final words were ‘it is finished’. There is nothing else to be done, there is nothing else that can be done, no-one else to follow or wait for. Yet for all this people still followed other so-called prophets or men of God, still followed other new faiths and religions, still trying to gain a place in Heaven. People……..there is only one way and it was accomplished over two thousand years ago.
